Brilliant strategic thought from Mao,
By Stratiotes Doxha Theon "2 Thes 2:15" (Richmond, Missouri) - See all my reviews (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: On Protracted War (Paperback)
Strategy is sometimes categorized as war strategy and grand strategy - one being the habitat of the military and the other being the habitat of the politician. Mao reminds us that military strategy is impotent without an understanding of grand strategy. Mao and Clausewitz would seem to agree on this much, war is simply the pursuit of political ends by other means. And therefore, any strategy in war must innevitably be tied to clear political goals for success.

This review is from: On Protracted War (Paperback)
This is a relatively short book that everyone should read, but most people in the US seem to ignore it. It explains why the US got bogged down in Vietnam, probably why the US won the American Revolution, and the potential problem in Afghanistan. The premise is simply stated - if you drag a war out long enough, the enemy will get tired and go home. The elements are all there, including political dissent and growing opposition in the enemy's home country.
