PreSchool-Grade 2?Priscilla introduces her friends, one at a time, and describes how each is feeling and why. "Oh, Shelly's feeling shy. Meeting new people makes her feel shy." Pictured on the left with brief text and ample white space, Priscilla mimics each emotion with her facial expression and body language. On the right, in a full-page watercolor illustration with a narrow white border, Leghorn depicts the child in question living out each feeling. A variety of multiethnic youngsters express friendliness, sadness, happiness, silliness, anger, confidence, frustration, loneliness, excitement, fear, and security. All the characters appear together in a double-page spread at the end, obviously pleased with themselves. In an introductory note to adults, the author suggests that they expand the interactive text by having children draw or act out different feelings. While not particularly exciting, this is a serviceable vehicle for exploring the topic. There are several reasons why I like this book. This book introduces a different character for each feeling, and tells what that child is feeling, why, and how you can tell. On the opposite page is a color illustration of the child, in order to better see his or her body language, expression, and situation. It then asks, "What makes you feel this way?" which opens up a diaglog between you and the child you are reading to. In my work with children, I am always surprised to hear their examples, and grateful that we found a format to help them express themselves. This book not only helps children identify their feelings and develop a "feelings vocabulary," but also teaches children that all feelings are OK and shouldn't be denied or judged.
