2.0 out of 5 stars Method #81 to be a millionaire, February 11, 2009
This review is from: 80 Proven Ways to Become a Millionaire, All you need is two or three! (Hardcover)
This book should include proven way #81 to become a millionaire, save the $30 dollars you would spend on this book and invest it somewhere else.

I was very excited about this book after hearing Mr. Damazo on a radio program, but that excitement turned to disappointment after I received the book. Like most "self-help" books, the actual useful information could be condensed into a 10-20 page pamphlet. In an effort to help make you rich, let me sum up the book to save you $30:
1. Spend less than you make
2. Don't take on debt
3. Save money and invest it

Seems pretty simple doesn't it? Well, if you believe Mr. Damazo, you'll be able to take that money and get a 15% annual return! When I heard that, I thought "this is the book for me". There is actually very little real investment advise, even fewer specific numbers, and disclaimers throughout such as "the calculations are from interactive online calculators and are not intended to provide investment advice. Taxes and inflation were not considered for obvious reasons." (page 254)

On closer examination, the numbers don't add up. For instance, Mr. Damazo shows how a family can pay off several credit cards, an auto loan, and a mortgage in just a few short years. He starts off by cutting $500 from the family's expenses to pay the first card off in one month. He then carries that over to another card, cutting another $100 of expenses to pay it off in a little over a month. He rolls the total amount being spent ($100 of original payment on each) to now pay $800 a month on the third card. By the time he reaches the mortgage, he cuts another $175 in expenses. For those keeping track, that $775 PER MONTH of reduced expenses. If I did that, I'd be eating nothing but Ramen noodles, reading by candlelight, and never heating my home.

Overall, I found the math fanciful at best. I would challenge anyone to take this book into a reputable financial planner and say "I want to do this". They will laugh you out the door.

The book is admirable in its attempt, and there are a few pearls of wisdom, many in the form of quotes from other authors and noted investors like Warren Buffet. But like so many books in the genre, 75% of the time is spent referring to the remaining 25%. I am by no means a fast reader, but I got through all 250 pages in a few hours. If this book sounds interesting, borrow it from a friend or check it out from the library. But don't count on it to do anything more than inspire you to look at where you spend your money or pay off your credit cards.

This book will not make you rich. The financial projections are optimistically high to say the least, and most of the gains are only on paper. The real lesson here is that the only proven way to become a millionaire is to save $1,000,000. And I didn't need a $30 book to tell me that.

I doesn't make me an instant millionaire, but it's given me techniques & things to do to actually make my money work better for me. A great gift to new parents, newlyweds, kids off to college....anyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Grow Your Own Wealth, July 25, 2008
This review is from: 80 Proven Ways to Become a Millionaire, All you need is two or three! (Hardcover)
80 Proven Ways to Become A Millionaire by Paul S. Damazo is an inspiring book for a time when Americans need to learn how to create their own wealth. Damazo explains Albert Einstein's Rule of 72, showing how 15% compound interest doubles your money every 4.8 years. He provides a chart that shows $5000 invested at birth will result in $2,560,000 at age 45.

Of course, the inexperienced investor may have trouble finding a sound 15% investment opportunity, but this book has several pages of high yield investment suggestions. The first is an interest-only home mortgage. The second is to "marry the one you cannot live without." He says "80% of all success depends on whom you marry."

Damazo also advises waiting six years to have children and living on one salary and investing the other while the wife is working. Giving children instruction in money management is essential, he says.

Among the characteristics of millionaires, Damazo says they create goals and commit to them. They watch for bargains, and they never pay interest by buying on time. Millionaires don't show off their wealth and they don't tell their children they're wealthy.

Filled with wisdom and tips for money-making success, this is an excellent book for anyone's financial library.

2.0 out of 5 stars Probably not the best, August 2, 2011

This review is from: 80 Proven Ways to Become a Millionaire, All you need is two or three! (Hardcover)
This was given to me by someone that I know (who didn't want it), and I'll be honest in that I did not thoroughly read it from start to finish, I gave it only a cursory examination. The figures seem overly optimistic and a tad unrealistic (with no mind paid to taxes and inflation), and there's very little elaboration on the methods you're supposed to be using to make it all work. Most of the book reads like a sales pitch (for the book itself!), the problem of course is that we're already holding the book in our hands and at this point no longer need to be sold on it. Lots of big numbers and sensationalism but not much that I would consider practical advice. There also seems to be a great deal of repetition and I can't help but feel that the entire thing could have been shortened to 40-50 pages while still serving the same function (this is the primary reason that I didn't bother reading it from start to finish). I don't mean to imply that the book has zero merit, just that you'd probably be better off with something else.
