Book Description

April 1, 1999
Louisa Jones has lived in Provence for nearly 30 years. With this revised edition of her popular book, she offers an expanded tour of Provence''s lush gardens, wineries, local crafts, museums, hotels and restaurants.'

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

A resident of Provence for 20 years, Jones draws on her intimate knowledge of the area to provide a glimpse of the art of living as practiced there. Brief essays, along with local proverbs, recipes, and excerpts from such artists and writers as Van Gogh and Colette, are grouped by season and complemented by lavish photographs that capture the seasonal moods. Unfortunately, the almanac style does not lend itself to providing insightful information, and Jones's prose is too characteristic of the canned tour guide's spiel and too self-assured to be compelling. A perfect coffee-table book--beautiful, undemanding, and insubstantial. Not recommended.

Canadian born Louisa Jones has been gardening in southern France since 1975 when she and her husband bought the old farmhouse they still inhabit. She has written some thirty books about contemporary French gardens, recently specializing in Mediterranean regions. For her first illustrated book, Gardens in Provence (1992) Louisa visited more than two hundred gardens of all styles and sizes. She found that, in the Mediterranean, there is no separation between ornamental and useful or productive gardening. Traditional Mediterranean gardening is "multiple": many pleasures, many uses for all seasons. Like Mediterranean cuisine, it is locally based and economical, but capable of great refinement; pleasure-giving, healthy and accessible to all. It has proven its capacity to maintain a durable partnership with the land. Most recently, Louisa Jones has been exploring vernacular Mediterranean landscapes, worked and fashioned by humankind for millenia, that are today biodiversity hotspots and an inspiration to gifted artists. Louisa has also published two books with leading French ecologist, Gilles Clément. She writes in both English and French, and gardens every day. She also organizes visits to private designer gardens around Avignon in April and October.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensationally colorful coffee table collectable!, April 23, 2000
This review is from: Provence: A Country Almanac (Hardcover)
This is a book with page after page of an area in France I love. It is a place I want to visit time and time again. I can almost smell the intoxicating lavender breeze as I glance at the cover.

If you purchase this book as a gift, I highly recommend enclosing something that has the scent of lavender. A soap or even a drop of lavender oil on the inside cover will make this a sensory experience.

While I love books filled with recipes, I could not resist this one. Oh, to be in France at this moment sitting by a lavender field. This book truly brought back memories of my trip to France and I enjoyed the information on olives as I had purchased olive oil and olives at a little sea side store in Cassis. You will be looking into plane tickets soon after reading about the rich culinary heritage of this region.
