Book Description

December 1984
Proverbs--a book full of wisdom--and yet a book demanding all one's wisdom to understand.Derek Kidner not only has provided a running commentary on the whole of Proverbs but has also included two helpful study aids. The first is a set of subject guides that pull together teaching scattered throughout the book. The second is a short concordance that helps locate lost sayings (in territory notoriously hard to search) and encourages further subject studies. In short, this volume is a wise person's guide to wisdom.

This review is from: Proverbs: An Introduction & Commentary (Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries #15) (Paperback)
Billed as a commentary, this book is more a collection of verse-by-verse textual notes. The first quarter of the book is devoted to an introduction to Proverbs and subject studies of its recurring themes -- God and Man, Wisdom, The Fool, The Sluggard, The Friend, Words, The Family, and Life and Death. The notes on the text itself are frequently insightful and helpful, but if you want an in-depth analysis of the text you should look elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kidner Proverbs Commentary, July 12, 2009
This review is from: Proverbs: An Introduction & Commentary (Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries #15) (Paperback)
I discovered this through reading a blog post by C. J. Mahaney. It's a great one-volume commentary. I use it for my devotional time.
It's not an exhaustive commentary, but it's not meant to be.
Particularly useful are the theme studies at the beginning of the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for Subject Study, January 7, 2009
This review is from: Proverbs: An Introduction & Commentary (Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries #15) (Paperback)
This book is very helpful in getting an understanding of what Proverbs has to say about specific subjects(words, wisdom, family, friends, the fool). The author is helpful in concluding functioning principles from the text and he always gives a scripture reference for his opinions (most the time more then one scripture, which I like). I have used this book consistently in my quiet times for a few months and it is helpful in getting God's perspective on topics as a whole, rather then reading a chapter in Proverbs and going from topic to topic.

First Sentence:
MAKE the bad people good, and the good people nice', is supposed to have been a child's prayer: it makes the point, with proverbic brevity, that there are details of character small enough to escape the mesh of the law and the broadsides of the prophets, and yet decisive in personal dealings. Read the first page
