My latest stray has the most sensitive stomach I've ever seen. In fact, I'm sure she would have starved to death had she been on the streets much longer. She will sometimes go days without eating a full meal, just picking at her food and I've learned what that means-vomiting and diarrhea can't be far behind.

My vet says she has "garbage gut" caused by her living off of garbage while she was on the streets. She's been treated with prescription probiotics and antibiotics which helped but as soon as she went off of the drugs the problem can back. Rather than keep her on antibiotics long term, I decided to try Proviable DC (actually my vet recommended it to me).

At first I didn't see any difference so I tried increasing the dose from once a day to twice a day. This seemed to do the trick and the vomiting has stopped completely while the diarrhea has significantly improved.

Bottom line, I would get my pet checked out by a vet first because there could be something seriously wrong. But if your vet recommends probiotics or just gives you a diagnosis of sensitive stomach, then definately give this product a try.

My vet recommends probiotics for my IBD cat. Initially he sold me a flavored one available at the practice, but my cat didn't like it and it had chicken flavor, which worried me, as the cat is supposed to not have any chicken at all. So I found these and I can mix them in his wet food without any argument from him. If you only feed dry, maybe you should spritz the food and then apply the Proviable. This has no flavor at all, and that's good. My main reason for writing this review is so that new customers READ THE DIRECTIONS. Don't be a dummy and put them in the refrigerator, like I did, which made the capsule contents turned from white to brownish. Nutramax tells me that their process allows only for room temperature storage and that they have eliminated deterioration issues with microencapsulation, and no tests have been with the product stored under colder conditions. Therefore, they suggest that I go ahead and start a new package as soon as I get it. The brownish ones won't hurt the cat, but Nutramax doesn't know what kind of viability they have now.

Bought this at the vets office for a much higher price. Seems to work well as a maintenance product, helping us to avoid intestinal problems. Well worth using. Saved distress for dog and for us, as well as a lot of money on vet bills. Will definitely use again!

My cat had been recently diagnosed with IBD (initially the Vet thought it might be cancer but thank God it wasn't!) and had started her on a 4 week course of antibiotics to clear up what he felt was an underlying intestinal infection. As a pediatrician I know when my patients are on antibiotics for any length of time I always prescribe a probiotic as well to help maintain the normal intestinal flora. So I assumed it would be a good idea to do the same with my cat. Since starting the Proviable capsules my cat's appetite returned, her vomiting completely stopped (even hairballs!) and she is back to her old self. I am sure the antibiotics helped, but I only saw a complete turn around in her health after starting the Proviable. I am continuing to keep her on 1 capsule a day to maintain good gut flora. A great product!!!

My poor dog has had issues with food since the day I got him. He has protein allergies (no chicken, beef, lamb or pork) so I'm very limited in what I can feed him but he also seemed to be very finicky. There were times when he would go 3 to 4 days without eating. I thought it was because he was bored with his diet and wanted something different. Then my vet suggested probiotics might help so I did a little research and found Proviable DC was one of the very few that actually had active organisms and passed all lab testing. I've been adding it to his food for a week now and I can see a marked difference. He no longer turns up his nose to his food if I feed him the same thing more than 3 times in a row. I truly believe this is making a huge difference for him and will continue to give this to him for the rest of his life.

My dogs' veterinarian recommended this product to sort out my dogs' g.i. issues and it has worked well for both of them and has also enhanced their immune systems.

This has really helped my dog's digestion. Her attitude has also improved since she is feeling better.
I highly recommend this if you do is older and needs some help digesting properly.

When one of my dogs was ill recently , the vet started him on the Proviable kit of the KP paste and Proviable DC probiotic capsules. It worked so well, the dog felt fine by the next day. I am continuing the Proviable DC to keep him in the pink and to avoid episodes of overgrowth of gut bacteria again.

I just open a capsule and sprinkle it on his food. He loves it. One daily does the job.

This is a very effective probiotic that has really helped rid my dog of occasional bowel upsets. She hasn't experienced upset bowels since the vet put her on a once daily regimen. The capsules are easy to pull apart so that the powder can be sprinkled on food. Amazon's price is great--my vet charges twice as much for the same box of capsules.

That said, I would suggest not purchasing this from Amazon during the spring and summer months. According to the Proviable packaging, the capsules are not to be exposed to temperatures higher than 77 degrees. Amazon treats all shipments equally and does not insulate or mark packages containing perishable items. The USPS delivered my first shipment to an unshaded metal package locker, where it sat for several hours, cooking and killing the live bacteria. After I contacted Amazon and explained what had happened, they apologized and promptly sent a replacement. However, for reasons unknown, the replacement was shipped the exact same way the original had been shipped: in an uninsulated, unmarked box, via USPS, who once again delivered it to the same unshaded metal package locker, where it sat for several hours. I thought it pointless to ask Amazon for a second replacement, expecting a repeat of the two prior shipping mistakes.

Bottom line: Great supplement, convenient and easy to handle, but unless you live where temperatures normally don't register above the mid 70s during the warmer months, buy it locally, or stock up for the year from Amazon during the cooler months.

Update: May 2014
I've been giving my cat the Proviable for about 4 months, and while it seemed to be working great in the beginning, she's now back to having chronic soft stools. I still think this is a great product and would still recommend it, but it seems that the probiotics alone won't keep her stomach issues (colitis, we think) under control.

Original review:
My two-year-old cat has had intestinal issues ever since she was a kitten. I tried changing her food, increasing her fiber intake, using Fortiflora (which made things worse and gave her and my other cat terrible diarrhea), putting her on an all Hills Science Diet i/d wet food diet, and nothing would firm up her stool. I bought this because of the great reviews, and I started giving it to her after being on a several-week-long round of Metronidazole (which seemed to help her intestinal issues temporarily, though I knew it was unlikely to last once she was off of it). I started off by only giving her half a dose (splitting the capsule between both cats) once a day, and once she'd been off the antibiotics for a week, her stool started softening up again, so I increased the dosage to giving her one full capsule once a day (I just mix it in with her food, and she doesn't even notice it is there). So far, it seems to be doing the trick, and her stools have continued to be firm for several weeks. I'm over the moon that I've found something that helps my little kitty, and I hope it keeps working!
