Amazing Show, Amazing Soundtrack,
By
This review is from: Providence: Music from the Television Series (Audio CD)
A show as wonderful as Providence deserves an equally impressive soundtrack, and this CD is no exception!I don't usually like to buy soundtracks because there are always some songs I can't stand mixed in with the few that I like. That didn't happen here. I bought it for the standout "In My Life," by Chantal Kreviazuk (the theme song), but the rest of the songs, some of which I had never heard before (especially Dar Williams' "What Do You Hear In These Sounds") have become new favorites. EVERY SONG on this CD is excellent, especially if you can remember the context in which they were used on the show. "Let the Sun Fall Down" (with gorgeous cello) was used in one of the earliest episodes, in which a teenaged patient of Syd's eventually died. The songs here are an eclectic mix that could probably be generalized as adult contemporary, with an emphasis on folk-pop. There's a definite autumn feeling to the album, maybe because Providence, being set in New England, has an autumn feeling itself. If you've never heard most of these songs, take a risk and buy the CD. It's definately one of my BEST recent music purchases!

Highly recommended--not JUST for Providence fans!,

I AM a Providence fan, although the show gets a little to sappy sometimes. The CD is fantastic, though, and it really represents the wide range of emotions that are regularly prompted by the show. I could identify almost all the significant moments in the show when these songs were played. The CD contains the newer, more contemporary sound that is sometimes more pop, sometimes more country, and sometimes a combination of both. My favorite is the last track, "Say Goodnight." It's a beautiful song. It was played 2-3 seasons ago when the teenager the Hanson family took in was killed in an auto accident. Very sad, but a soundtrack always has the most effect when you can connect it to the emotion you felt when it was played. And, of course, I have always been a fan of the theme song, "In My Life," which is included in its entirety on the CD. But, you do not have to be a "Providence" fan to enjoy this CD. It's a must for those who like the mellow sounds of well-written, well-sung songs.

Beautiful as the TV show..,

One of the most pleasing facets of 'Providence' the TV series is the music, which is always 'just right' for the mood of the episode. This CD offers you some of the best of the tunes featured on the show, including two versions of 'In My Life' the series' theme. 'Say Goodnight' by Beth Nielsen Chapman is particularly indicative of the musical sounds regular viewers associate with the beauty of the show itself. 'Con Te Partiro' by the great Andrea Bocelli is an added bonus as I see it, lending a different musical element to the caliber of the CD. There have been numerous times I have checked the epidsode guide online for the titles of some of the songs used on the show when I wasn't familar with the particular selection. With this CD you can have your own 'soundtrack' of the Providence music anytime you want.

"Let the Sun Fall Down Around You",

This wonderful CD came up in an e-mail conversation with a friend recently and reminded me just how really good it is. One of my favorite shows ever on television was Providence, starring Melina Kanakaredes. Like the show itself, which was warm and funny, and much like life itself, hard to define, the sountrack is an eclectic mix of the various feelings we have in our day to day struggle to move our lives forward while savoring the good moments. Those fans of the show like myself will find much to love here, and will probably remember certain episodes where these songs played in the background. No fan of the show will ever forget the first time they heard Marc Cohn's "The Things We've Handed Down" as Melina Kanakaredes watched home movies of her deceased mother, who would appear to her daughter to guide and prod her in the right direction. Eva Cassidy's "Songbird" is just too good for words so I won't try. There are two versions of "In My Life" here. Besides the version we heard at the beginning of every episode, we get Shawn Colvin's cover of this Beatle's tune, and it is quite excellent. Gus' "Laugh I Could Learn to Love" fits right in with the warm feeling this teriffic show left in our hearts every week. Jonatha Brooke's "Linger" perfectly captures in pop fashion the approval we all seek from our most cherished loved ones, who we sometimes have the most trouble relating to. "Forgive" is a place everyone has been in their personal relationships; ready to move on but still not ready to let go of our hurt. Rebecca Lynn Howard has some wonderful vocals on this song. "What Do You Hear in These Sounds" has the humor and angst in life wrapped up in a cylindrical melody which is infectious. Dar Williams does a nice job on this selection. "Con Te Partiro" is a beautiful Andrea Bocelli selection with the graceful feeling of the show itself. The album closes with Chantal Kreviazuk's fine version of "In My Life" and Beth Nielsen Chapman's "Say Goodnight." It was too soon to say goodnight to this most wonderful of shows, but this CD lets us relive a few of the fine memories we made gathered around the television eating popcorn and watching something of quality come our way, and as always, pass much too quickly. So say goodnight but not goodbye and pick up this warm reminder as soon as you can.

Chantal, not Shawn,

The Amazon.ca review may confuse some people into thinking that Shawn Colvin sings the theme song at the beginning of the tv show. She does not. That is Canadian artist Chantal Kreviazuk. She's an amazing artist. This cd is worth it for her song alone. She also sings a beautiful, heartwrenching version of Leaving on a JetPlane for the armageden sountrack. I'm not a member of her fan club, but I do think she is an incredible artists. My empathy to fans of Providence 'cause its ending now. It was a good show.

Gosh, was this cd hard to find. But I am SO glad I did. This is simply one of the most beautiful soundtracks I've ever heard. I love to listen to this at the end of the day. My favorites are without a doubt "Songbird" and Chantal's "In My Life". I have heard many versions of "In My Life" over the years, but this is my favorite. Buy this cd if you can find it. You won't regret it!

WITHOUT A DOUBT THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING CD EVER CREATED BY NBC. THE SONGS ARE TRULY BEAUTIFUL.THIS C.D. IS JUST AS BEAUTIFUL AS THE TV SHOW IS. IF YOU HAVE NOT BOUGHT THIS ALBUM I HIGHLY SUGGEST IT. YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED, AND IF YOU HAVE NOT EVER SEEN THE TV SHOW "PROVIDENCE" THEN YOU BETTER START WATCHING. IT'S A FAMILY ORIENTED SHOW, AND IS TRULY TRULY THE BEST SHOW ON TV.

I bought this CD because I loved the series and loved the theme song version of In My Life. That is my favorite song on this CD. The rest is an eclectic mix that you need to make a personal decision about. Some are good and some I skip. I think with this CD it is a personal preference which songs you enjoy or not. My favorite of course is the one I bought the CD for.
