4.0 out of 5 stars stirring, sonic cathedral depicting anguish and transcendence, September 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Proving Winter Cruel (Audio CD)
This album promised an awful lot, based on their previous releases, 'St Valentine's Garage' and 'Stretch' and the first instinct, the easiest, is to be let down upon first listening. But further attention and perseverence pay off, as you find yourself starting to come up with ways to convince your friends that this thing is really worth listening to! The album grabs you and punishes you as you sit there unable to halt your own free fall into the depths that this band leads you into. It's pretty much a sad album, filled with images of regret and sorrow, but all with the underlying hint that all is probably not lost. But still, you feel punished as you sit there in front of the stereo-a punishment you feel you deserve and a punishment administered by no one. This album feels like your own personal "sorrow-tron". Like Woody Allen's orgasmatron in 'Sleeper', the sloppily-constructed, sonic machine created by Kill Creek swallows you whole once you're willing, runs you through the wringer, squeezing out all your sad ya-ya's, then gingerly wipes the sweat from your brow and lays you gently back on the couch where you groan weakly, thinking about how silly you'd feel if you suddenly started crying. But, of course, there is no crying...just the sweet relief of knowing that you really could have, if you wanted to. Proving Winter Cruel is adult entertainment for those who are just beyond the grasp of youth and just short of anything resembling the stability and sanity of a grownup world. And it is at this point on the big timeline of life, where the comfort of things like Proving Winter Cruel, are most welcome and even maybe, just maybe, somehow helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Proving Winter Cruel is awesome, April 28, 1999

Kill Creek never disappoints. Maybe not as driving as "Valentine's," but equally if not better is "Proving." Scott tells you stories as the music bends and turns all around you. Scott and Ron's guitars blend together so well, it is hard tell where one begins and the other ends. All the while, Pat is holding the groove together with some excellent bass work. I give Kill Creek two thumbs way up. These guys rock like only some bands dream about.

I was always in awe of these guys. They were one incredible band. I wish they were still around. I wish I still lived in their town, but we're all older now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, December 14, 2001

I own a maximum of ten albums which bring me back to an EXACT time and place. This is one of those albums. This album was like meeting the first guy who could stare STRAIGHT through me. But it is tragic and sad, rather than threatening. And absolutely beautiful.
