4.0 out of 5 stars Great Look Into Provos!, January 12, 2003

This review is from: The Provisional IRA (Paperback)
I am new at learning about the Northern Irish Troubles. This book does a great job of telling how the Provos came to be. He dives right into the subject and tackles it head on. He doesn't try to write just for the sake of writing (like Boyer does, I think) but insteads talks about the subject right away and informs the reader.

It explains in great detail about the start of the IRA and why the split between the Originals and the Provos happened. Not only does it talk about the military split, but the split due to political reasons. He also talks about the movers and shakers in the IRA. The only thing that he doesn't speak of in great detail are events that happened. Though when he writes about the events, he does explain how the event changed the preception of the IRA.

The only bad thing about this book is that it was written in 1987. I would like to see him create a new version. This writing was finished around the Anglo-Irish agreement, so there is no post-Hillsborough writing. Also, there is no talk about the what happened in the 1990s and the Good Friday Agreement, of course. I would like to see another book by this author for that reason.
