Book Description

September 1, 1998
This work examines the Provos, from 1969, when the IRA was effectively dead and buried, to within a few short years, when it had resurrected to become the most feared and sophisticated terrorist organization in the world. The book is based on in-depth interviews with key personalities in the Army, Police, British and Irish governments, giving first-hand accounts of the key events. Based on the author's television series on the IRA, this book traces the group's history and relationship with Sinn Fein.

5.0 out of 5 stars the troubles a republican view, June 3, 2011
By
This review is from: Provos: The IRA & Sinn Fein (Paperback)
This is a fantastic view of the irish troubles from the point of view of the republican movement,so if like me well im british so no big fan of IRA terrorism or any terrorism come to that, how ever i put my prejucies to one side and read this as a neutral, and if you can do that you can gain an understanding of why in 1969 things built up to the IRA campaign of the 1970s and 80s and why young people flocked to become members of the IRA,the fact that men starved them selves to death for their cause and put them selves up against the british armys SAS which are not things you would do lightly says a lot about the depth of feelings that were aroused at the time,it is a fact that the british army was sent out to protect the catholic community and were hailed as friends to begin with only to eventually be seen as the oppressors of that community after such catasrophic episodes such as bloody sunday, which helped pave the way for the provos to be seen as the protecters of their people, and how the IRA plunge from what has to be seen as heroic acts like the self sacrafice of bobby sands to the black deed of killing two small boys in warrington one afternoon, what ever your feelings or perceptions of the provos and sinn fein you will find this book very interesting a must read for any one interested in this subject.
