From the Inside Flap

Steve Raymond never wanted to be a cop. He never wanted to be a private eye. He was, in fact, a member of the nice, quiet profession of dentistry. So the one thing Steve Raymond, D.D.S., never figured on was having to solve a murder. Then one night, in a local Seattle tavern, Steve finds himself the only doctor in the house when a local musician collapses onstage, and the mysterious circumstances surrounding the musician's death gradually pull the reluctant dentist into conducting his own investigation. But no one else believes it's murder: not his wife, the lawyer, or his best friend, the cop. Steve is on his own this time as he tracks down the most unexpected killer of all, and finds himself . . . Proximal to Murder.

About the Author

In addition to being the author of the Steve Raymond, D.D.S., mystery novels, Eric B. Olsen is a high school English and social studies teacher. He is a graduate of Hoquiam High School, the University of Washington, and Saint Martin's College. The inspiration for the Steve Raymond novels came from his father, who was a dentist for many years in Hoquiam, Washington, and his own love of music. Mr. Olsen is a musician and also a practicing historian, currently at work on a biography of a well-known jazz pianist. He lives in the Pacific Northwest with his wife and two sons.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent first mystery that's really different!, November 17, 2000

There are a LOT of "amatuer sleuth" mysteries out there, but this one is truly unique. When I realized that our hero in this case is a dentist, I wondered at first just how the author was going to make this character's involvement in the murder investigation seem plausible. No problem, the plot is seemless, and carries the reader right along without stretching believability at all. The subplots involving the dentist's marital and parental problems, and the details about his sideline as a saxophonist in a blues band, add depth and additional interest to the story, and are totally convincing. (Indeed, I wasn't surprised to learn that the author is also a musician: no wonder he can describe the music, musicians, and gigs in this novel so compellingly!) A great first entry in what I HOPE will be a new series. Keep writing, Mr. Oslen, please!

I really enjoyed Proximal to Murder, by Eric B. Olsen. Though I enjoy reading books from most of the genres, I expect one thing from any book I read: that it engross me totally while I'm reading it. Otherwise I simply don't have the time to waste- who does these busy days? Mr. Olsen's story did that, and the fact that it is set in the Seattle area (which I am familiar with) was icing on the cake. A good plot that didn't seem contrived (which I couldn't guess the end of - a mark of a good mystery from my perspective!) and interesting, yet real, characters make for a good read on these cold nights. I plan to buy the book for some of my mystery reading friends for Xmas - and that's my best recommendation of all! Good job Mr. Olsen, I look forward to your next.
