5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album!!, November 16, 2000

This review is from: Pru (Audio CD)
I hadn't heard of Pru until I went it the music store and heard her CD playing. At first I thought it was Sade because "Smooth Operator" was playing. When I heard the other song, "Got Me High" I was truly impress. This album is for the Sade, Erykah, Macy, D'Angelo, Lauryn, Jill and Angie fans out there. Anyone who loves neo-soul will love this album. I can't believe that her label didn't promote it better because she could be right up there with the previously mentioned artists. This album is more than you would expect from a Debut. Definitely worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Musical Find, April 14, 2001
By
This review is from: Pru (Audio CD)
Sometimes I feel so grateful to find wonderful music. PRU's debut is definately wonderful. These are great songs that do not fit into the mold of today's lackluster R&B songs. I love music that is original and heartfelt. Some thought went into these songs. One gets the feeling that PRU really likes these songs and is singing because she wants to. Unlike some of today's artists who sing for a hit record. Candles should an anthem for all those with broken hearts. I really do feel you, girl!! Get this CD, you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and with emotion, January 9, 2005

This album conveys a lot of emotions. The singer sings heartfelt and especially the song "Candles" turned out very well. Some people call Pru Neo-Soul, but this could be seen as classic soul too. Pru is coming back. Check her out! :)

I recently purchased this CD at used CD store and it's not bad like some reviewers are saying. It has an India.Arie-like sound, but Pru is defininely poetic in her on way. I haven't heard much from her since this debut four years ago, so hopefully she hasn't left the music business. The production isn't bad, but variety is somewhat missing. The lyrics are very nice though. Hopefully she is somewhere working on an album because she is very talented.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poetic Pru!, November 9, 2000
This review is from: Pru (Audio CD)
I was truly impressive by the debut album of this Houston native Pru Renfro. As a poet myself I can relate to her lyrics and the way she expresses herself through melody and musical rhythm. I really loved her enhanced cd because it allowed me to see a live version of her jamming in a jam session of some of her best songs. I also got to see what her everyday life is like on the video, which allowed me to explore a little more into her world. You also see her on the mic at a Spoken Word performance showing off her poetic skills. "Prophecy of A Flower" introduces you to the true poet she really is. Pru is basically a poet who knows how to sing! "183 Miles" gets the album off and running with its catchy hook. "Candle" is simply wonderful. It's like hearing a beautiful spoken word poem set to the best melodic music. "Hazy Shades" will resonate in your mind, especially the way her vocal delievery seduces the listener. "Smooth Operator" is a gem. I think the way she redoes this classic would make Sade herself proud.

I think every song on this album is a good one, and I found myself listening to the whole album repeatedly from track one to track 13. Pru is a very spiritual woman and she gives praises to God to where all praises are due. She reveals things about herself through her poetic prose in song, and makes you feel what she feels. Plus, she co-wrote and co-produced practically every song on the album. Pru is resonating deep, spiritual, and focused with a vision. I knew when I bought her album, I not only bought a debut musical masterpiece, but a rhythmic creation of spoken world poetry through song, life and love! This album is definitely worth the price of experiencing Pru! God is Love!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD. Well worth the price., June 12, 2006
This review is from: Pru (Audio CD)
I am always excited to find new music that is from talented individuals. I enjoyed this album and especially loved "Hazy Shades." The album is unique in that the songs display not only talent but also creativity and passion. The music is also not commerical R&B but is heart-felt and substantive. A good buy for individuals who enjoy Neo-soul or are looking for something outside of the top 40.

5.0 out of 5 stars this is great!, May 11, 2001

Why is it that most of the women making music that matters these days aren't the earnest, Lilithfied, Joni Mitchell-bred Caucasian folk starlets of five years ago, but rather the [attractive], Arethafied, Afrocentric R&B soul sisters?

Whatever the reason, you can make room for another one on the shelf where sits Macy Gray and Sade.

Like a slicker -- though not too slick -- and poppier cross between Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill, songstress Pru Renfro kicks off what should be a long and illustrious career with a skillful, savvy and self-assured collection of love songs.

Smooth, seductive, emotive and wise, Pru's breathy and boldly told compositions flow inside a gorgeous funkin' moonlit groove to nibble elegantly on the earlobe...

Lyrically, Pru's not rewriting the Book of Love, but rather borrowing heavily from the Motown chapters and not really giving them an update or anything new: "Ooh you got me high on your love/You keep me runnin' comin' back for more/Boy you know the oceans/They run deeper than the seas/Can't compare the love you give to me."

Then again, it's not what she says, but how she sings it -- and on her debut, Pru sings it supremely
