This review is from: Prudence Be Damned (Paperback)
In many ways, Robert Devore is the typical son of a typical, well-to-do upper middle class family, Ivy League educated and with all the benefits of his upbringing. After meeting and falling under the spell of Mouse, his newest girlfriend, he drops out of Princeton, claiming that he only wants to make movies (at his father's expense). His father Hugh cuts him off without the proverbial penny, telling him to get a job and to support himself. This weak-kneed ninny then conspires with Mouse to kidnap his mother, Madeline, and to hold her for a ransom of $250,000, to finance his ridiculous, pie-in-the-sky dreams. They drug his mother and imprison her in the country house of Mouse's deceased aunt. Needless to say, our "hero" begins to have second thoughts about what he has done and is about to release her when an older, crooked friend of Mouse arrives, eager to get a share, if not all, of the ransom money. Hugh and a friend have been following leads which direct them to where Madeline is being held. A grand finale occurs with Robert still trying to free his mother, and her trying to reconcile what he has done, with the love of a mother for a son. I doubt very much if I'd have a big enough heart to ever forgive a child who so cruelly and callously played on this natural devotion and endangered a life, for money. All I could think of when reading this book was how I'd love to slap him till his ears rang!!
