I don't know who the reviewer who mentioned Amanda is talking about but I bought this book and really found it boring and hard to read. I couldn't understand how anybody could write anything positive. I checked out that one reviewer (NEWBOY) and his other books he's reviewed...Guess what? The guy buys books about believing in aliens from outer space living here with us...

I couldn't understand how anybody could write anything positive. I checked out that one reviewer (NEWBOY) and his other books he's reviewed...Guess what? The guy buys books about believing in aliens from outer space living here with us right now. I guess if he can believe in somehting as unbelieavle as that it makes sense he can believe this book is at all good. Trust me. Save your money and buy some other book on protecting your privacy. That's what I'm now going to have to do because I found this book so completely unreadable.

For anyone who has ever purchased anything on the Internet, received credit card applications in the mail or been contacted by telemarketers, PRYING EYES is a must-read. 5.0 out of 5 stars An Essential Read, July 14, 2004
By
This review is from: Prying Eyes : Protect Your Privacy From People Who Sell to You, Snoop on You, or Steal From You (Paperback)
Prying Eyes is an essential read for anyone with a computer, a cell phone, a credit card, or a mailbox. Gertler alerts the reader to the very real risks of life in the information age, while contintually offering suggestions for how you can protect yourself. He covers topics that reach far beyond those normally associated with identity theft, like privacy in the workplace, the confidentiality of medical records, and the ways we all allow our homes to be invaded every day. Yet, Gertler offers these sobering facts without becoming hysterical. Serving as more than just a warning, Prying Eyes offers its readers tools to protect their privacy, while still allowing them to profit from all that technology has to offer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting, July 22, 2004

Without pandering to alarmist sentiment, the author reveals intricate, simply told anecdotes and examples of how electronic advances have threatened basic civil liberties. Well researched and filled with candid insights from an expert in the field. Excellent, topical reference for libraries and anyone interested in freedom issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars SPAM IS THE LEAST OF YOUR PROBLEMS, July 13, 2004

Quite simply the BEST book on Identity theft I've seen.

It's scary what can happen to you if you don't watch out when you use your computer. I thought I was careful, but Gertler gives easy and simple things you can do in minutes to prevent getting into REAL trouble when using your PC which can wipe out your life savings, ruin your credit rating and keep people from knowing exactly what you do online. And it's not geared towards computer geeks, but average people like me, who only use email, shop online or download music.

I have been using anti-virus programs, downloading security patches and using firewalls, but Gertler points out that computer criminals are one step (or TEN) ahead of you. And it's not just hackers, but your bosses are spying on you too!

Read it and you'll first get scared and then, if you do what he says, feel calm and protected right away. Once you're attacked, he explains that there's very little the law can do to protect you. For those interested in how this criminal cottage industry grew, he gives some nice historical background on how this activity happened. Gertler protects you from everyone from Bill Gates, profiteers on down to thrill-seeking thugs.

I've read other books on the subject, but this one is the most comprehensive and practical.

A MUST read for anyone with a personal computer or who knows someone who uses one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful, just awful, May 7, 2008

This review is from: Prying Eyes : Protect Your Privacy From People Who Sell to You, Snoop on You, or Steal From You (Paperback)
I was given this book by a friend last week, and I read it (or tried to read it) over the weekend. What an intellectual mess. The information is poorly presented, it is confusing, and almost seems to be written by someone with ADHD. Spare me, please. There are far better books out there, as noted by many other reviewers.

After reading the book, the friend that gave it to me then let me in on a little secret which some astute reviewers have already wisely surmised. He told me that Mr. Gertler convinced friends (including my friend) to shill his book to distort the Amazon rankings. Now I cannot be sure this is true, but given that so many ratings are 1 star and so many are 5 star with nothing in between, it makes sense.

Mr. Gertler should keep his day job, whatever it is. As for the book, its pages are lining my bird's cage as I type this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read This to Protect Yourself, December 16, 2004
This review is from: Prying Eyes : Protect Your Privacy From People Who Sell to You, Snoop on You, or Steal From You (Paperback)
Reading this book has helped me so much!! I was a victim of identity theft last year and since reading the book, I know this will never happen again. It is SO easy to read and so helpful. I gave it to my sister to read who will then pass it down to other family members. Everyone should read "Prying Eyes" to prevent identity theft from happening to them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Educational, December 8, 2004
This review is from: Prying Eyes : Protect Your Privacy From People Who Sell to You, Snoop on You, or Steal From You (Paperback)
In a time where government continues to act in secret, corporate america disposes of workers, and universities beat you over the head with debt, Eric Gertler acts and informs on ways to combat these underlying problems. With thousands of guides coming out on sex, dieting, and fashion, its refreshing to read advice about something seemingly overlooked but of great urgency.

5.0 out of 5 stars Question mark on this one, November 26, 2004
This review is from: Prying Eyes : Protect Your Privacy From People Who Sell to You, Snoop on You, or Steal From You (Paperback)
No stars, really. Haven't read the book. Gonna buy it anyway. How many of the reviews do you think were written by shills? Looks like Amanda's been on Amazon anti-reviewing Eric's book (or maybe it was her mother - hooray for family values!). Whattaya wanna bet?

Gonna give Eric a vote of confidence. Imagine what would happen to the economy if we stopped buying stuff we didn't know anything about?
