5.0 out of 5 stars Praying the psalms, June 17, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Psalms Breathing: Meditating the Psalms with Music, Movement and Silence (Paperback)
I am an Episcopal priest and a vowed solitary monastic hermit. I live inside the psalms. And Louis Gruber's meditative commentary on the psalms is the best I have ever read on the psalter.
The commentary on the psalter is both transcendent and imminent, human and divine, a truly incarnational expression of the God who dwells among us. Gruber drinks deeply from the bottom of the well, drawing from both his Jewish heritage and his Christian experience. His use of the Hebrew as he unfolds ancient meanings for us is profound. The book has a way of relating the psalms to our most human failings and graces.
I highly recommend this book. It is useful for a private daily meditation on the psalms alone or as small group work with yoga breathing, dancing type exercises for individuals or groups.
When I pray with the commentary in the daily office, I read the psalm first, then the commentary, and conclude with rereading the psalm.
