Awful story, great gameplay, February 22, 2008
This review is from: Psi-Ops(TM): The Mindgate Conspiracy Official Strategy Guide (Official Strategy Guides) (Paperback)
Psi-Ops is full of generic sci-fi and conspiracy cliches, but packs in a horse load of sadistic and creative gameplay.
You play as a psychic superspy with amnesia who's been sent in undercover to thwart the evil "The General" of the evil "The Movement". You battle you way through thousands of faceless goons, and a handful of interesting bosses, while trying to take down a fiendish conspiracy to build an army of psychic super-soldiers.
But wait! It's better than it sounds!
The core gameplay is standard third person shooter, but the fun here comes from the fact that your character has an arsenal of psychic powers including telekinesis, pyrokinesis, mind-control and a nifty brain-sucking power that makes your enemies heads explode in a blast of purple lightning.
The developers have filled every level with an assortment of items which can used in conjunction with your powers to slaughter your enemies in creative and sadistic ways. You can just smash them or burn them with your tele/pyro kinesis, use the interactive environments to throw deadly objects at your enemies indirectly, or use your mind control to make them kill each other and then commit suicide. It also has a decent shooting engine for simple run-and-tactics.
This is terrific gameplay for your inner sadist, wrapped up in a stupid, terrible story.
