Pssst!,
By Dan "BrosFIL" (Eloy, AZ USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pssst! (Hardcover)
Mr. Rex has the unique ability to entertain not only his target audience, children, but also the next couple of generations (up, of course). My entire family "gets a kick" out of his incredible drawings and use of color, as well as the story lines and choice of words and humorous, tounge in cheek prose. I have all of his books to date (and will continue to purchase each new one as he publishes them). Thanks, Adam.

It's a unique, hilarious story highly recommended for any collection.,

Adam Rex's PSST! tells of a bunch of animals who've been cooped up too long at the zoo. So when a little boy with capable hands happens along, he finds each exhibit wishes him to bring them something special. It's a unique, hilarious story highly recommended for any collection.

Zoo picture book with an unexpected twist,
By
This review is from: Pssst! (Hardcover)
Completely creative. This book works as a picture book for little kids, and ALSO (this is very important for families where the reading levels are a wide range) it works as a comic-book type story, and it is filled with puns and funny details. You have to see it to believe it - the illustrations are dynamite. I love:
+ the zoo animals cruising around in their little free-range hamster balls + elderly Batman + rats eat trash and goats eat trash but pandas eat bamboo + the voice bubbles coming out of people (and animals, and birds) + "All T-shirts Great and Small," + the "hilly goats bluff" + the map on the endpapers + corncorncorncorncorncorn fuelfuelfuel.... (!) + the high quality illustrations - surprises everywhere you look Savor every page! It is difficult to think of another picture book that works on so many levels and is FUNNY! And with humor that appeals to big kids and little kids and parents. Even the "humor-free" acknowledgment page is worth a read. Big accomplishment - get this one.

A Basic Story Picture Book, Doesn't Reach the High Quality of Humour That Adam Rex's Books for Older Readers Do,
By
This review is from: Pssst! (Hardcover)
You won't find many a better author that writes humorous fiction for all reading levels than Adam Rex. Psst! is a picture book and although better than a lot of other picture books out there, it doesn't quite reach the humour level your expecting when purchasing an Adam Rex book. It's a worthwhile read for fans of Rex but you'll probably want to borrow it from your library before purchasing. The illustrations as well vary in quality with this one, the animals look sensational as you would expect from Rex, the little girl isn't that well drawn though, and the rest of the illustrations on each page are mostly just outlines as you would find in a colouring book. There are the little hidden image and word jokes you expect from a Rex book if you're prepared to take the time to look.
Basic plot is a little girl visits the zoo where in the style of Gary Larson's Far Side the animals can talk, have taken on human qualities and have plans of their own. As the girl passes each animal they all yell out Pssst! When she approaches each one, they all request that she buys them various items seemingly to fix their neglected enclosures. But all is not as seems, there's a twist to these zoo creatures plans!

Not impressed.,

A young girl visits the zoo. The animals say, "psst!" to get her attention and then they proceed to ask for strange things. The young girl seems to be a little annoyed but she keeps her word and buys the animals the strange things they requested. What will the animals do with them?Illustrations are unusual but interesting. Great book to talk about talk bubbles and dialogue. Rex attempts to create humor but I did not find the jokes to be funny.

Something Different,

This review is from: Pssst! (Hardcover)
If your kids "get it" and have a slightly different sense of humor (and intelligence) but crave just the right amount of silly - this is a great book. Adam Rex thinks and approaches literature a bit differently than others and has a very sarcastic sense of humor that our family adores. The illustrations alone are almost always worth a purchase and this book is no exception. If you are looking for a cutesy, feel good, easy read - this isn't it. If you're looking for something interesting and humorous, even if it may require a bit of effort to explain to your children at first, this is a fabulous book.

Great illustrations!,

I love the artwork here, with the retro text and the little jokes hidden around on every page.
My nieces weren't so into the artwork, but they liked the dialog a lot. Thought it was hilarious. All that's left is the plot... which, okay, is a bit thin (girl goes to the zoo, gets co-opted into picking up groceries for zoo animals, does so), but so be it. Can't have everything.

Best book we've seen this year,
By Nathan Wilcox (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pssst! (Hardcover)
I have probably read over 500 different children's books this year and this is the best one so far. The illustrations are whimsical, inventive, and beautifully detailed and the story is hilarious. My three year old, my wife, and I were all laughing out loud as we read this. And the jokes didn't get tired after the umpteenth reading. This is Adam Rex' best book for smaller children and I could not recommend anything more.

Clever. Wonderful. There are a couple others by the same author, but we like this one the best.
