A 60's retro sound with attitude,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Psych Ward (MP3 Download)
The Urges offer one the best contemporary catalogs of music (albeit only a single album) that echo the diverse sounds of 60's rock and roll. From the beginning to the end of "Psych Ward", one hears hints and reflections of great bands past, without becoming overly dependent upon any one style or influence. As a teaser, download the free track "You Don't Look So Good" from Amazon; every other track on the album is as good or better.
Others have described The Urges as a retro psychedelia or garage band, but I think those descriptors do them injustice, as their style is much more eclectic than that. It might be equally unfair to compare The Urges to other bands, as they are unique and talented enough to stand on their own. The unfairness of comparisons aside, upon first hearing "Psych Ward" in its entirety it is nearly impossible not to draw parallels to other great bands. Stylings similar to the early Rolling Stones and Kinks are punctuated by the manic, in-your-face energy of The Sonics. Or, jazzy surf-instrumental riffs may be the prelude to a Doors-like composition, with undercurrents suggesting The Byrds or Cream. "Psych Ward" is a fun album for our time, and is not simply a kitschy revival of music past. The Urges would be equally at home on a stage in 1965 as they would today overlooking a mosh pit. Likewise, "Psych Ward" is essential for those fans of the current retro-influenced rock, and worth a listen by indie rock fans looking for something upbeat and a little different. My only question to The Urges would be: "When can we expect your next album?!"

What an awesome album. I am so happy with Little Steven's Underground Garage or I'd have never discovered this gem. I made "I gotta wait" my ringtone! If you like garage rock, do yourself a favor and check this out!
