Bachelard analyses the associations the sight of fire arouses. In the seven chapters of this wonderfully concise book, the author, relying on the literature written on the subject as well as on his own recollections from childhood,shows how fire is associated with respect, reverie, and purity. But above all, Bachelard provides an original explanation for Man's discovery of fire: according to him, the idea of rubbing two pieces of wood together to get fire was the consequence of sexual fantasy. And fire is,in truth, heavily loaded with sexual connotations.
