5.0 out of 5 stars A simpler time of vivid imaginations, April 26, 2008
By
WendyW (San Francisco, Ca.) - See all my reviews
At age 55, this book speaks to me not only of vivid childhood memories of fun (and some scrapes along the way), but also as a type of manual of understanding the mind of boys! Jack's descriptions of the adventures he and his brother and their little group of friends had, were very enjoyable. The singular voyage of the "Flying Cloud" was a chapter of persistence and craftiness (gathering the cardboard!), and I must admit I rode down the grassy hillside with all of them (less the injuries at the bottom...) I particularly loved the chapter on "Sticks and Stones (boys and girls)". The line about how boys dealt with emotions was so profound: "Thats how boys dealt with emotions:don't think about them, react immediately, sock the other guy or throw a rock or two, and then be friends again because who wanted to waste a single hour when we could be playing?" That one line speaks volumes about the differences between boys and girls. Even Jack and Doug's den mother at the scouting event's mischief-making, still realized that "yes, we were scamps and scoundrels but we were also 100% young boys." Also, even with all the unwanted changes that have assaulted children in the past 5 decades (sex-drugs-violence-rebellion), I still believe the core nature of boys and girls is the same. Seeing the world through Jack and Doug's eyes was a treat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!!, February 18, 2008

This was a very fun book to read! I could identify with the adventures of childhood in the 50's that Jack Osborne recalls so clearly, since my brothers and I had similar experiences in the following decade. This is an enjoyable book for "boomers' and a good book for younger folks to see how it was for us "back in the day".

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun stories of kids growing up. I did the same!, January 5, 2008

I really enjoyed reading this book. It's an easy read, full of anecdotes and adventures that brought memories of my own childhood. Its humor made me laughed and the author's view point of life in the 50's as well as being boys and girls, using simply their imagination to have fun, is very refreshing and enlighting. We need more books like this. we need children using their imagination and dreams more so these days,as we did when we grew up.
