CONFRONTATION WITH YOUR DAD, April 14, 2006
This review is from: Psychic Academy, Vol. 11 (Paperback)
In the aftermath of last volume's attack on the LDC headquarters by the entire Psychic Academy in an effort to rescue Ai, the cast of the series is left in a shambles. In this last installment of the series, Mew has vanished, only leaving word that she is going to stop the plans of her father, Dr. Watabe, who wants to grant aura powers to the entire planet overnight with his aura code processing generator. Ai finally has to confront Orina about their relationship or lack thereof, even if he has to hurt her in the process. It's time for him to come clean about Mew, that's if even HE knows the truth! Meanwhile his brother is still wrapped in protective armor, undergoing a healing process that will last days. There's no time to spare though, because Ai must set out for America if he wants to stop Mew from getting herself killed as she goes it alone against Watabe and the newly crowned king of dark energy, Tokimitsu, whose aura emits death to all those around him.
This last volume of Psychic Academy, a series I have followed for the past two years, is a really bittersweet experience. It's nice to see most of the character's lives work out, but be prepared for some sadness with some of their fates. The pasts of Mew and Ai are finally brought to light and really bring a deeper experience to the whole series. I wish it had gone on longer, but as opposed to American comicbook series, most manga have an ending place and are never revisited, which actually makes the works more valuable in my opinion. For example, characters in the Marvel and DC universes are resurrected constantly, but Japanese manga have more of an air of finality and power. This was a great series.
