Very prescient, July 16, 2005
This review is from: The Psychic Factors Of Civilisation (Paperback)
This is the final trilogy of great books in sociology. The first would be anything by August Comte. The second anything by Herbert "survival of the fittest" Spencer.
But they use a biological metaphor for man (especially spencer). Lester Frank Ward uses physiological / Darwinian psychology [which is just now coming back into vogue]to explain the import of psyche. We are not just animals. We have different faculties via an early form of punctuated equilibrium in evolution. It reads much like Descartes Error by Damasio.
Society must not be based on dog eat dog animalistic blind laissez faire government. We must counter balance our egoistic desires with inventive and intellectual goals. TO do this we must go beyond fighting politicians and creed to experimentation based upon agreed upon social goods.
This book is the best sociology book ever written, by the creator of American sociology. Buy it now!!
