This should have been a flop. Yet why am I still shaking.,
By Aaron (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Psycho 2 (Lythway Large Print Books) (Hardcover)
If your fortunate to have landed a copy of Psycho 2, I must be respectful to the public audience and warn you: your in for a big surprise. The prose is simple and efficent, Bloch dosen't bother with tantilising us with un-neccessary diolouge- everything that's in this book is there for a reason and every sentence has an alterior motive. I'm am 17 years old and I cant help asking, why dosen't anyone know who Bloch is. He's a mascot of writers past. He has influenced many writers ( McDonald, King, Straub) and myself. This is a fantastic book, very enjoyable and totally unpredicatable. Why was it never adapted for film? Bloch at his best.

Well, I dont really know what to say. It is certainly much larger than the first book, but it doesnt get many more good points than that. It has a good begining that gets you wanting to read more and more, but in between the first few chapters and the end, it talks about hollywood life ... I kept reading because I thought it was going somewhere, but I was wrong. The begining and the end were good, but the 3hundred pages or so in between were just awefull. I only recomend it if you are a die hard Robert Bloch fan.

Welcome back Norman, or not...Blochs sequel to his most popular book is somewhat disappointing. That said, I will still read Psycho House, just to finish the sequels although I do so with a strange feeling that I may be disappointed again.

Not Like the Movie,
By Ann Sherry (Michigan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Psycho 2 (Lythway Large Print Books) (Hardcover)
Surprisingly this book has nothing in common with the movie "Psycho II" other than the title. I was glad, because I didn't enjoy this at all and that is rare for me to dislike something by Robert Bloch. It's a most forgettable book. It's good to obtain to see what it's like. But for entertainment purposes, I'd watch the movie instead. The movie takes us back to the Bates Motel with Norman getting out of the mental hospital after many years. And that's what we expect when we hear "Psycho II". Not this.

Bloch did a good job with the sequal to his maserepece psycho, but moste of it drug and focused on things that were not important, but I do recomend it fore those of you that have red the first one.

good sequel,

good sequelIn the book they are trying to show what happened to Norman Bates after he was captured. He is in a state mental hospital for life. He somehow escapes and gets revenge on the couple that testified against him to get him imprisoned. He escaped from the hospital and stole a van from 2 nuns and then crashes and blows up the van with the nuns and a hitch hiker that he picked up to pretend it was him. While this was going on, in Hollywood there was a motion picture being made on the story of Norman and his killings. The movie executives are all in fear since they found out Norman escaped and he might be out to kill all of them. I liked this book since I read the first book and had to read the second one. The author did a good job of creating imagery. He also showed the real pressures of psychology and living in a psyche ward. I also liked how the author wouldn't let you forget about one character and how there was a consistency of what characters he was going to show you that chapter.

PSYCHO 2 review... duh....,
By A Customer
This review is from: Psycho 2 (Lythway Large Print Books) (Hardcover)
Well, after reading the original Robert Bloch novel, I was amazed at how simple the prose was and yet how terrifying Bloch created the atmosphere. Atmosphere was very important for the first novel because it shrouded everything in mystery and made you aware that old Norman Bates was somewhat... irregular. Now we have PSYCHO 2 and I have to say that its biggest flaw is that it lacks the proper atmosphere- at least the atmosphere that made the original novel so amazing. The setting is not a motel located off an old highway in the middle of nowhere with a house on a hill and a figure sitting inert by one of the windows in the houses. It's in Hollywood and is there really anything scary about that? Well. Let me just say that it is a surprising novel. Surprising in the way that, though nowhere near as scary as the original, it still remains a book worth reading. (What upset me was how they trivialized Lila and Sam Loomis in this one). The doctor who searches for Norman, Adam Claiborne, is quite likable and you begin to sympathize with him and his belief that he is a failure. That makes the ending all the more shocking and tragic. More bloody handiwork in this one and it actually is quite amusing. What I did like was the idea of the fictional characters in the book deciding to make a movie on Norman Bates. That was the first of its kind in a horror story, I'm pretty sure. Anyway, it's a fair novel and worth reading though don't expect it to match w/ the original....

Not the best book around, but good enough to have been the basis for the film sequel.

DON'T get this book.....,

This book is one of the worst books I have ever read. It started out good, but the end is horribly dissapointing. For one thing, the book was supposed to be about Norman Bates. Norman was in the first three or four chapters. In short, if you're looking for a book about Norman Bates, buy Psycho 1. If you want to read a book that really misleads and upsets you, buy Psycho 2.
