What a great read by one of the best singers I've had the pleasure to rock to for years. I feel like I was sitting at a bar drinking Bud's with Mike as he tells his story of the history of THE Fools. I'm so glad we had such great music in the Boston area growing up here. WBCN and crew were so supportive of the local music scene and certainly did play the cassettes from the Cars, Just What I Needed and Psycho Chicken by the legendary Fools. Too bad the vinyl didn't get as much air play in later years. THE Fools have some great tunes and I'm so glad we can still see them live and up close at most venues in the area.

I was so surprised with all of the details told in the book from a rock era where many could not remember what they did the night before never mind recapping 30 plus years later. I think Gino's advice about not partying too much like the audience does, or you will become them was the best advice a true friend could give to a band trying to get their mojo rolling. The band was lucky to have him as a friend.

I was very pleased to read about how classy some bands could be such as Rush and treat the opening act with respect while others not so much. To me, this falls under the category of karma. I also found it interesting how one hit wonders like the Knack made the huge mistake of ignoring FM radio and playing smaller venues just to be sure they would sell out. They sure blew their chance to make it.

The tales of cross country travel by rock bus had me laughing my ass off. This is so vivid and well written you can just picture what this must have been like.

Mike has a great sense of humor and is a great storyteller. One suggestion I would have to anyone who really enjoys great rock n roll is to put a Fools show on your bucket list. You can thank me on the other side. - King of Beer

What can I say, I loved this book! First off I found the book to be very well written. To tell you the truth I did not expect this quality of writing from a rock star. Mike is not Shakespeare but his writing fits perfectly with the tale that he tells. And that tale is the history and story behind one of America's coolest rock bands "The Fools." The Fools are a Massachusetts band and I, being from that same part of Massachusetts as they are, found that many of their adventures hits close to home. I myself attended a few of the concerts mentioned in this book. The narrative follows the Fools as they gain in popularity and not only crisscross America but the world itself. The story takes you from backstage at concerts to the busy streets of Japan; from penis festivals to a concert attended by old priests and nuns. By the time your finish reading the book you feel like you have traveled along on this fairytale adventure with a group of old friends. All I can say is, "Thanks Mike for sharing the ride!" Please note that I did not use the words "madcap," "zany" or "antics" in the writing of this review.

I overheard a local radio station DJ raving about this book,
so I bought it for a former DJ I know.
Just skimming the book, he was laughing hysterically at the
quotes and passages. I know this will be a fascinating read
for any music fan who knows what goes on in the music industry.

Rock and Roll Enthusiasts and Historians... look no further for more rock facts of the 70's and 80's.
During this time, The Fools played a major part in the Rock and Roll world. More than you may think...

Mike Girard lets you in on all the details of what it was like to tour with bands such as Van Halen, Rush, Doobie Brothers and more.

There is also a wealth of information about all the members of the band... with goodies such as, being rented as a child, coal and clam digging in Ipswich MA, additional body appendages... I'll stop there.

I've read many rock biography's and this one ranks the highest.
I didn't know much about The Fools before reading this book... I now have GREAT respect for this band and their music.

Fools for life!!! :)

... that you may have never heard of. If you spend much time in the Boston area over the last few decades, then you are surely familiar with The Fools. They have toured the world, often opening for bands one may have heard a thing or two about such as Rush, The J. Geils Band, The Doobie Brothers, and Van Halen. Amongst their loyal fans, The Fools have garnered a reputation for their outrageous stage shows in clubs all over New England. This book chronicles the history of the band through the many anecdotes and recollections of lead singer and funnyman, Mike Girard. Whether or not you are a fan of the band, you will find this a quick (because I had a hard time putting down) and entertaining read. As an aficionado of the band biography genre, I have read quite a few books on the rise and fall of my favorite bands, but none have been as entertaining as "Psycho Chicken." So if you are the kind of person that delights in absurd rock trivia (I bet you don't know who really first appeared on MTV) and whether or not you have heard of The Fools, you will likely find this a fascinating glimpse into the world of sex, drugs, rock and roll, mimes, brown M&Ms, wax fish statues, the man behind the curtain, and The Flying Zucchini Brothers.
