1.0 out of 5 stars Some substance here ... but not much
The book's most helpful tips -- interactive play, litter-box placement, thorough veterinary checkups -- could probably be condensed to a few pages, which would have been simpler and could have been posted online or compiled with more data for a future book with real substance. Honestly, there is not a lot of useful information here to warrant the publication of a book on...

Details a number of case studies from the files of a professional cat behaviorist. If you ever wondered what it'd be like to counsel cats and their owners, here you are.

I didn't get the impression that the book was trying to be a serious treatise on cat-box behavior or spraying or whatever, though each vignette includes treatment plans and information about what was going on in that case. For in-depth treatment of issues like cat-box behavior and spraying, I'd recommend one of the author's other books, "Think Like a Cat". The treatment plans here are interesting to read, giving much insight on how one goes about changing an animal's behavior. And what cat owner doesn't love reading about odd cats? We got lots of them here, and sometimes the owners are just as odd. Honestly, I love reading these frequently amusing, sometimes very touching stories.

"Psycho Kitty" contains vignettes of what a day of a cat-behaviorist's life is like. I found the book absolutely fascinating, sometimes humorous, sometimes very touching.

5.0 out of 5 stars psycho kitty, August 8, 2002

This review is from: Psycho Kitty?: Understanding Your Cat's Crazy Behavior (Paperback)
I just got my first pet, a kitten, two months ago. Before I got her I read tons of books on cats and what to do or not to do. But many of the books were very dry and did not address behavior problems. Then a friend showed me Psycho Kitty and I read it in one afternoon. The book is easy to read and understand. And while the stories Johnson-Bennett tells are anecdotal, they do point out things we stupid humans do TO and FOR cats. I found out that some of the things I was doing were ENCOURAGING psycho kitty behavior.

The author does not talk down to the pet owner and provides practical advice. By writing this book, she is also telling us that we are not alone with our cat's weird and fascinating behaviors.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is worth its weight in GOLD!, December 21, 2001
This review is from: Psycho Kitty?: Understanding Your Cat's Crazy Behavior (Paperback)
After physical and mental trauma from the most recent flood, moving, rebuilding, moving again, one of our indoor cats just wasn't the same. My vet surprisingly couldn't give me any info on behavior problems and what he did offer, I now know, was actually wrong information. He recommended we drive 90 minutes (one way) to TX A&M with my traumatized cat/s to see their behavior "experts". What an experience that would have been - like addding fuel to the fire. Found this book here on Amazon and it really saved us. It gave thorough information in story-style that explained more about cats, their views, their behavior - where, why, etc. - than the other books I purchased written by different authors. Read an interesting, funny or touching story, learn from their experiences and be entertained all at once! I'm looking forward to reading her other books. I couldn't be more grateful and I'm sure my cats would thank her too if they could!

5.0 out of 5 stars Psyco Kitty, June 21, 2002
This review is from: Psycho Kitty?: Understanding Your Cat's Crazy Behavior (Paperback)
I was so glad I read this book. I had a cat that I brought home from the Humane Society. Ater he passed away I waited 5 years and decided I wanted a Kitty. I immediately feel in love with Allie and while shopping one day I spotted Psyco Kitty at the store. I bought it, and I am so glad I did. I found I couldn't put the book down. It was full of wonderful stories, but more important than that I actually learned so much that I never knew about cats. I learned so much about how my cat thinks, what they like, and don't like, and why. I highly Pam Johnson-Bennet's books!

I found myself laughing and crying as I read the stories. This book provided sound behavior information in the most amusing way. Johnson-Bennett approaches each subject with warmth and humor. She really understands how cats think. If there's a cat lover in your life you should buy this book. This is the most refreshing cat book I've read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent. Fun to read and great advice., May 13, 2005
This review is from: Psycho Kitty?: Understanding Your Cat's Crazy Behavior (Paperback)
I have kept cats all my life and had become resigned to the strange or destructive behaviors that they sometimes display. I thought there was nothing I could do to change them, so I just accepted the bad with the good. The author of this book really understands cats and provides good, practical solutions to the problems that cat owners have. If you are about to give away or euthanize your cat because of a behavior problem, please give this book a try first.

If you like James Herriot, you'll love this book. Pam Johnson-Bennett writes with such compassion. Her training tips are great and very unique. The other cat books I've read have been boring. Pam teaches you how to have a great relationship with your cat in a light and funny way. You must read this book!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Johnson-Bennett comes to the rescue of kitty kraziness., March 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Psycho Kitty?: Understanding Your Cat's Crazy Behavior (Paperback)
Psycho Kitty provides excellent and effective ways to understand and respond to your cat. I had never heard of a Feline Behavior Consultant before, so I must admit I was a little skeptical. Johnson-Bennett, however, knows what she is talking about, and her thoughtful approach to solving cat's behavioral problems makes for an informative and oftentimes humorous read. From Stinky's refusal to use his litter box to Spencer's interesting affinity for water, Psycho Kitty covers major kitty problem areas as well as other interesting and uncommon ones. I particularly enjoyed Johnson-Bennett's lighthearted yet professional approach to her kitty clients. In some cases, the cats proved to be easier to deal with than the owners! For Psycho Kitty I am grateful, as it has answered some of my questions regarding Phoebe, and has allowed me to look at her with new, and hopefully more understanding, eyes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Company, July 1, 2006
This review is from: Psycho Kitty?: Understanding Your Cat's Crazy Behavior (Paperback)
I read this book while sitting on a plane that took 3 hours to take off due to bad weather. I can't express how happy I was that I brought it with me. The book has numerous tips on how to work with a difficult cat (just like mine), but most importantly, the author explains why a cat might be misbehaving, that is, what is your kitty trying to tell you. Pam Johnson-Bennett does know about cats behavior!!
