Book Description

May 2, 2010
The objectives of the book were to explore what constitutes psychological abuse for three married women in the Cayman Islands and how they perceived their experience of psychological abuse from their spouse. Data collected were by interviews that concentrated on the lived experience of the women and how they interpreted their experience of psychological abuse. The participants? experiences are described separately as well as integrated into a summary experience representing the group as a whole. The findings summarized the abuser as dominating and controlling and the victim as submissive and passive. Their experiences of psychological abuse followed a specific pattern and cycle of destruction which included verbal attacks, monitored family and social activities, control of money, sexual dominance, abusive attitude such as tone of voice and facial gestures to name a few. The main conclusions of the study were that these women endured invisible wounds, the psychologically abusive relationship was mostly kept hidden from others, the abuse was continuous and escalated, all the marriages ended in divorce, and that society in general tolerates psychological abuse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful Analysis of Abusive Marriages in Grand Cayman by One Who Knows the Island, August 31, 2010
This review is from: Psychological Abuse of Married Women: Experiences in the Cayman Islands (Paperback)
It takes little time to realize that the author knows not only the terrain of psychological research but also the terrain of Grand Cayman's culture and underpinnings. Often times a researcher lands by plane and finds people to fulfill her or his research requirements and departs - missing ever so much of the nuances. With Jane Hunter's deftly crafted and researched work, one knows that this island is her home and the writing flows from that spout as well.

That she focused on three women was a wondrous choice. The voices of the women rise of the page, adding the grip of the reality of these women's lives to the framework of the psychological study itself. This touch of Studs Terkel and Deborah Tannen and Robert Coles allows the voices of these women to be the thread in powerful ways. Without revealing too much, the seven essential themes Hunter discovers are: 1) Understanding of the psychological abuse experience, 2) Central feelings and body awareness, 3) Self development, 4) Redefining personal values, 5) Concept of time, 6) Child and self relationships and 7) New discoveries.

This book would find a welcome home in the hands of a broad range of people, from psychologists to ministers to married men and women and those about to embark on marriage. Not to mention, the children of abusive marriages. For those from places other than Grand Cayman, this would serve as a telescope into the minds and hearts of women who somehow: survive! Hunter highlights meticulously the role of prayer and children in these women's journeys. Their journeys seek to cast off and obliterate the words of their husbands so that they may discover a freedom and a balance they never knew married.

As a first offering into the world of publishing, kudos to Hunter's bravery to allow these women to be heard and to let them know they and their stories matter not only to themselves, but to others, like Hunter, who sees their stories aiding counseling in her homeland.
