Book Description
Flexing Your Mind along with Your Muscles… You know what a good stretch of the muscles feels like; loosened up and ready for action. Psychological Flexibility Training (PFT) goes for much the same 'ready for action' feeling, but inside your head where things can get as tight as any muscle. Like learning to stretch muscles, PFT is very simple and almost everyone can learn how to be Psychologically Flexing (PFing) with just a bit of practice.
This 69-page manual (may be longer or shorter depending on your device) contains three sections. The first is a step-by-step guide to practicing PFing (Psychologically Flexing) throughout your day. You will learn how to 'stretch' your mind along two imaginary dimensions outlined in the Matrix Diagram (the diagram, not the movie). This mental stretching is often interesting and sometimes it's downright fascinating. The goal is feeling light and ready for the stuff that life throws at you.
Section two describes how you can collaborate with one or more people PFing, much like joining with people to do yoga or an exercise program. You can do PFing in your workplace or community group. The exercises are also great warm-ups for the creative problem solving that is often a necessary part of business meetings.
Section three is optional reading. It’s a simple explanation of a theory of how people learn language called Relational Frame Theory (RFT). Basically, it’s about how the wonderful process of learning words can at the same time result in psychological inflexibility. (No worries, it also shows us how to reverse the effects and get flexible again.)
This PFT Manual is brief so you can get through it quickly and start doing the exercises right away. The Kindle version will allow you to download and be PFing in just a few minutes. The printable “Amazon” version his handy if you want to write down your own PFing ideas.
Flexibly yours,
Kevin
Kevin L. Polk, Ph.D. The Psychological Flexibility Group
In this book Dr. Polk takes the reader on a journey into the Matrix and the land of psychological flexibility. This is a highly useful, practical manual based on solid evidence of what works to get people moving toward what is important. It is extremely user friendly with no jargon or dogma. All you need is the ability to "notice" as Dr. Polk guides you through a series of experiences designed to get you in touch with your life and what matters to you. The result is more flexibility and increased valued living.
As a clinician and educator I have applied Dr. Polk's approach in my work and consultations. People "get it quickly" (from young to old) and find it to be very effective in addressing a wide range of issues. Once you practice with a few key ideas you are up and running. Take it out for a spin!
