5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource!
I was surprised to see this book ranked so poorly and then read the predominantly negative reviews of this book. As a psychology instructor and a PhD student I've found this book to be invaluable. 1.0 out of 5 stars a widely-used but poorly-written textbook
This textbook covers a lot of material, but in an unsystematic way: the definitions are not worded in a predictable and consistent manner, the more important issues are not given priority over the less important ones, but everything is simply thrown together into an indigestible and boring glob.

It is an excellent introduction to the topic and although I have over a dozen reference tools on psychological assessment I frequently refer to this one when I need a concise definition or brief discussion of a topic. I recommend to my students who are headed to grad school to hang on to this text!

3.0 out of 5 stars A necessary evil, November 19, 2005
Unfortunately, I found the book a necessary evil. It was a required text for my Master's program tests and measurements course, otherwise, I would have never bought and read it. It does cover a lot of material, and I did receive a good understanding of what psychological testing and assessment is all about. But the style!.. It sometimes took me 4-5 attempts to read a passage and make sense out of it. Some chapters (like a Statistical Refresher) felt like the authors made their very best to make sure the readers won't understand a word. With a few exceptions of entertaining examples, the book is boring and is written in a very difficult language.

Another point - for the kind of price I expected the illustrations to be in color. Well, all illustrations (good thing, there are many of them, at least) are black & white with occasional pink.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read, October 2, 2007
By
This is a textbook- teaching you about tests It is a lot of information but a good read. I'm an undergraduate and with a hectic schedule and the reading goes by fairly easily. I take my book with me and actually enjoy it. I especially like the crossword puzzles in the review book. Would recommend to anyone who wants to really understand testing in our culture today.

*Caution- the book goes into statistics a little, so you need to have already completed a course in stats to understand some of the items.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brand New Condition, October 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
In my assessment class, we haven't used the book outside of regular chapter readings. I've used it as a reference for the assignments we are doing and for the midterm we are about to take. For instance, it explains that calculations of Z and T scores, standard deviations, and reliability/validity in detail. It has been helpful in explaining things that I didn't grasp completely during lecture. My professor is an excellent lecturer and I know that I can usually get the clarification I need from from taking my time and just reading. However, I noticed that the yellow sticker (label) at the bottom right of the cover says (for use outside the United States). It's an international student version, which can't be resold in North America. There is also content in this version that is not in the version sold here in the U.S. I don't know exactly what it is or what that means in terms of usefulness to me for my class or as a future clinician, but I was a little concerned. I don't know if I should be or not, but the label wasn't clear as you can tell by looking at it on the amazon web page. When you enlarge it to see the cover, the label is not there, so go figure. Otherwise, it's in English and it has been helpful and I planned to keep it.

This book is alright. As my prof says- it definitely covers everything in the field but doesn't really have a good grip as to what is really pertinent/used in the field. Overall- it is a textbook and as those go- it is easy to comprehend, has pictures, ... Ehh- what can I say? If your instructor uses it then better to buy it cheaper than in a school bookstore!

I have not yet used this book for my class, but I thought this would be the entire book PLUS workbook, but it was only the workbook. I will have to order the book now too.
