Book Description

0495504556 978-0495504559 January 18, 2008 5
Straightforward and student friendly, James S. Nairne's PSYCHOLOGY, Fifth Edition, uses a proven problem-solving approach to help you discover how to apply psychology to your everyday life. A firm believer that you must understand what a psychological process is for before you can hope to understand how it works, Dr. Nairne presents topics from a "functional" perspective. With this signature approach, chapters begin by focusing on the "why" behind psychological processes before introducing what they are and how they work. Our brains are filled with psychological "tools" that control everything from emotion to memory, and each helps us adapt and solve important everyday problems. Nairne describes these tools in detail, shows you how they're used, and focuses on specific situations in which they are applied. Emphasizing critical thinking and active learning, PSYCHOLOGY, Fifth Edition, provides current, comprehensive, and practical coverage that you can immediately apply to your life.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Psychology: The Adaptive Mind presents all the conventional content of an introductory book, but with a twist. Rather than beginning with theory or research, it begins each topic with an everyday example of a "problem" to be solved (for example, how to remember a telephone number; how we can "know" that a rattlesnake's rattle signals an event). In every chapter, Psychology: The Adaptive Mind "reframes" the subject matter of psychology by placing the major emphasis on how particular behaviors, cognitive processes, and emotions help people solve important adaptive problems -- not just survival problems, but everyday problems. For example, the principles of classical conditioning are introduced as "solutions" to the problem of how people learn about signals in their environment. By presenting the field of psychology in the context of "adaptive problem solving", Psychology: The Adaptive Mind provides a distinctive and cohesive viewpoint that effectively organizes and integrates the material and makes it easy to learn from. -- Midwest Book Review --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product. Wish there were more like these!, March 7, 2011

I ordered this book for my girlfriend and was a little sceptical on what I would receive. I thought the book would arrive beat up with pen or highlighter markings all over... that wasn't the case, the book was practically brand new. She actually thought i spent a lot getting the brand new book and was extremely surpised when i told her that i paid less than half of what the new books are selling for. it came out to be cheaper than renting a book too. i will definitely buy from this seller again. Extremely happy with the shipping time too. ALL IN ALL GREAT SELLER!
