About the Author

TAN Ai-Girl obtained her Bachelor Degree of Science with Education (Hons) at Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (1987). She then became a research associate (1987-1989), instructor (1988-1991), and a Master student (1989-1991) at the Department of Psychology of Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Kogyo Daigaku). At the same university, she acquired her Master Degree of Social Engineering in Psychology (March 1991) with financial assistance from Monbusho (1989-1990) and a sholarship from the Iwatani Foundation (1990-1991). Thereafter, she was granted a scholarship the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and pursued her doctoral studies at the Institute for Educational Psychology and Empirical Pedagogy of University of Munich (Germany). In 1995, she graduated with a PhD in Psychology. Since then, she has been a faculty member at the National Institute of Education (Psychological Studies) of the Nanyang Technological University. Her main research interests include creativity, culture and psychology, and multicultural education. For the past several years, she has been investigating the psychology of creativity and multicultural education including parental perceptions of disability and has published papers in regional and international journals. In July 2000, she published a book "Psychology of Cultivating Creativity" (Singapore Lingzi).

GOH, Michael received his BA double-major in Psychology and Sociology and an MSc in Counselling and Counselor Education from Indiana University, Bloomington. His PhD in Educational Psychology, majoring in Counselling and Student Personnel Psychology is obtained from the University of Minnesota where he is currently an Assistant Professor with the Counselling and Student Personnel Psychology Program. Prior to joining the University of Minnesota, Goh was a faculty member of the National Institute of Education. He assisted in starting the first graduate programme in applied psychology in Singapore and became the programme's first coordinator. Goh also worked with a team of collegues to initiate a student advising and counselling service at the institution. Goh's research and outreach to diverse communities has led to more than 100 consultations and training workshops on multicultural, international, career development and organizational development issues in SIngapore and the United States. His current research involed an interdisciplinary team seeking to develop mental health terminology that is culturally and linguistically accurate and appropriate for the Hmong and other Southeast Asian immigrant groups.
