Book Description

0465085172 978-0465085170 July 2, 1999
Despite its importance as a primary tool in creating and comprehending the self, memory is largely neglected in the therapeutic training curriculum. As a result, many therapists are prone to accept incorrect clinical assumptions that can cause damage to their clients. This concise guide will offer an authoritative yet accessible account of the basic principles of human memory that are especially important in the therapeutic setting. Topics include the latest findings on “recovered memories,” memory and mood, suggestibility, body memories, and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Scientific and Practical Investigation of Human Memory, August 3, 1999

This review is from: The Psychotherapist's Guide To Human Memory (Hardcover)
I am currently enrolled in a PhD program in clinical psychology. In the interest of being a well-informed clinician, I decided to read Dr. Jones' book on memory. Dr. Jones' book, which I found to be both informative and fascinating, accomplished many things in just over 200 pages. The reader is guided through the available scientific research on memory, separating fact from fiction- this is a real eye opener! Many techniques currently being used in the clinical setting are not supported by sound science. The different theories on how memory actually works are also discussed and analyzed. In the closing chapters of the book, the pages in which I took the most interest, the author makes the important step of explaining how current scientific knowledge in memory can assist therapists in the real world. The book ends with a historical sketch of the field of psychology and a plea, with suggestions, for clinical and experimental psychologists to work more harmoniously for the mutual benefit of both parties and the field of psychology. I highly recommend this extremely well written and illuminating book.
