Kathleen Wheeler's text Psychotherapy for the Advance Practice Psychiatric nurse is a text for new as well as experienced APRNs. The chapter on The Neurophysiology of Psychotherapy is remarkable for demonstrating how psychotherapy restructures the brain. Using current research citations, Dr. Wheeler explains how psychotherapy facilitates brain healing by mediating the reintegration and connection of neural networks that have become dysregulated due to trauma. Two chapters expand on trauma: Stabilization for Trauma & Dissociation and Processing Trauma. Assessment tools are included. A Weekly Plan for Increasing Resources is a tool ready to help mental health consumers develop their own internal resources. I like everything about this text, but most of all the style: there are a lot of box inserts with detailed information. Dr. Wheeler invites us to go directly to resources she cites for further exploration. A teacher of students of psychotherapy would like that Dr. Wheeler has included student activities and responses at the end of each chapter.

Most books in the psychiatric APN tracks are medical or psychology. This is written by a very seasoned and excellent APN. Very good book with issues related to our profession. Assigned reading for my DNP track, but a keeper.

I purchased this book from the author at the 2008 APNA convention. I read it cover to cover, and continue to consult it regularly to tailor my approach to the individual patient's needs. I found it to be very useful in my efforts to achieve expertise in psychotherapy. The graduate programs in psychiatric nursing would do well to adopt this text, as they need to put more emphasis on the practical aspects of therapeutic modalities. There is a lot more to Advanced Practice PMH Nursing than psychopharmacology and research!!
