This new third edition of PSYCHOTROPIC DRUGS combines both fundamental aspects of clinical psychopharmacology and individual drug profiles for a complete psychopharmacologic nursing reference. Part One provides an overview of psychotropic treatment; describes drugs in terms of the disorders they treat; discusses contemporary issues; and presents lifespan considerations. In Part Two, nearly 100 commonly used drugs are profiled in detail and organized alphabetically for quick reference. Includes new chapters on pharmacologic principles and herbal therapies; new content on ethinic differences is highlighted throughout.

5.0 out of 5 stars Psychopharmacological overview in practical format, November 29, 2000

This review is from: Psychotropic Drugs (Paperback)
In it's second edition, the book divides into two essential overviews that are very "user friendly". The first part profiles a general clinical psychopharmacology which provides a well written and comprehensible neuroanatomy review, which is basic to the understanding of how psychotropic drugs work. The mental disorders are discussed which these drugs are used to treat, along with ECT, abuse dynamics and interventions.

The second section provides a complete drug profile for more than 100 psychotropics. Included in each profile are facts that exceed most common nursing medication books. The drug index is all encompassing and has index resource to furthur promote a handy reference source.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, June 10, 2010

This review is from: Psychotropic Drugs, 3e (Paperback)
This is the definitive book for psychiatric nurses who want to better understand the potential benefits, risks, and interactions of psychiatric meds. I also recommend the other editions, although this one is more updated. I've been doing psych nursing for 21+ years and this book is the one I recommend for nurses new to psychiatric nursing who really want to understand the meds. In my experience psychiatric health care providers often overprescribe or prescribe in a less than safe manner at times. This book gives me the knowledge to better oversee the safety of my patients.

1.0 out of 5 stars Psychotropic Drugs, January 4, 2007
This review is from: Psychotropic Drugs, 4e (Paperback)
This book presented a very concise and professional review of the different types of psychotropic medications and the disorders best treated by them. This book was required for my Doctoral Psychopharmacology class and was well received by the class.
