Hardcore Industrial Dance Techno That Really Shakes You,
By Max Etchemendy (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Psykosonik (Audio CD)
Psykosonik is an incredible techno band. In my experience with techno over the years I have rarely found such a consistently excellent group. Their first, self-titled compact disk, Psykosonik, is heavy on rave, industrial beats. It's a very active listening experience, and includes cyber-world lyrics reminiscent of the greatest of techno greats, Kraftwerk. There is one somewhat mellow song on the album, Down to the Ground, which proves that Psykosonik is more than just a hard-beat-pounding techno group. The entire ambience of the album--from the sound to the lyrics to the anarchist overtones of some of the songs--brings forth images of cyberpunk landscapes. If you like beat-intense techno, check this out! Also look for their second album, Unlearn, which features more mellow but much more sophisticated songs.

Psykosonik was always a favorite for those early 90's industrial/techno nuts. And for good reason.. They definitley had it going on. To this very day I still can't understand why they disbanded. This album, while not as good as their 2nd, is still incredible. This CD focuses more on the dance scene while the other is focused more on atmospheric.
Some highlights on this album are "welcome to my mind" and "silicon jesus". Of course don't take my word for it.. Check them out yourself. Psykosonik is a perfect example of 90's industrial, which in my view, was the best time for the genre. PS. if you enjoyed this CD then check out Psykosonik's tracks on all 3 of the Mortal Kombat soundtracks.. The style on those songs is alot closer to this CD then the 2nd album.

Here' is a quote from the Marathon Story FAQ Page: http://marathon.bungie.org/story/faq.html:
"Hey I heard that Power of Seven did the Marathon 2 and Infinity music but I can't find any info on them. Do you know who they are? Power of Seven Inc. were a Minneapolis-based digital music content publisher headed by Paul Sebastien. Paul was responsible for writing and producing the theme music for Marathon 2 Durandal and Marathon Infinity. Power of Seven Inc. were acquired by Headspace Inc., a leader in Internet music and audio technology, and relocated on-site to Headspace's San Mateo headquarters. Paul Sebastien assumed the role of Director of Production for Headspace. (Update: Headspace is now known as Beatnik Inc. and Paul Sebastien is no longer listed as a company employee) Paul Sebastien is also the leader of the platinum record award-winning electronic/alternative group Psykosonik. Psykosonik's first album "Psykosonik" was recorded in 1992 at Chicago Trax Studio in Chicago, and released in 1993 on Wax Trax/TVT Records. This is what the band had to say about it: During our early days of songwriting in 1991, which was before any of the mainstream media hype about cyberspace, the Internet, or cyberpunk; things like techno-empowerment and Net surfing were considered decidedly un-cool by many...so many in fact, that we really felt like shaking things up a bit. Hence, our first album is quite overtly techno-oriented, conceptually and musically. We wanted to explore areas of man/machine duality, the role of religion in cyberspace, VR hallucinations, and connectivity. Simon Brownlee <simon.brownlee@pobox.com> who has the Psykosonik CD maintains that some of the tracks are like the Marathon 2 and Infinity themes. He went on to say that "the tracks ReWl!". His words not mine. But if you like the techno sound this is worth getting. You can hear samples of Psykosonik tracks on the Psykosonik album page. Psykosonik can also be found on irc: #psykosonik on Efnet. Psykosonik's first CD "Psykosonik" can be ordered from CD Now. Yes copies are still in stock. The CD contains 10 tracks, the 10th track being entitled "I am God". Didn't the 10th military Mjolnir Mark IV cyborg become a God by the end of Infinity? Coincidence? Track 3 "Teknojihad" has parts which are similar to the Marathon 2 Durandal theme. The Psykosonik CD is worth getting if you like the Marathon techno sound." Yes, Psykosonik is (or was) Power Of 7 Inc. And they did the music to Marathon 2 and Marathon Infinity. Great stuff!

i got the "Unlearn" cd first by these guys first, and i was thinking "hmm, sings like pop music, yet has a definite mood and quick beat." this first cd is WAY closer to what most people consider "techno" or "electronica". the thing about this album i like the most is the heavy rhythm etched with the edge of occasional electric guitar (very nicely sequenced too). Also they have a very smooth singing style, all together a well balanced bouliabase of house/techno/rock. plus its lots of fun to listen to while reading "Dirty Pair" :)

These guys are great! This album is full of up-beat, fast paced tunes that I love hearing over and over again. Most people think of techno as wordless music made of heavy bass drums and various keyboard sounds. Well, this one will prove them wrong. Okay, so all the lyrics are either about politicas strife or cyberspace and drug use, but hey, you can sing along with them. If you like electronic music without the heavy metal edge, this disc is EXCELLENT.

Simple the best techno-music I've ever heard,

I bought this CD back in early 1994 simply because I liked the cover artwork. I never heard of them or their music. I popped it in the car on the way home from the mall, and I was blown away. The lyrics have meaning and the music isn't dull and repetative like most techno. I've recommended it to my friends and girlfriend. They aren't techno fans at all, but they defnitely like this CD. That says a lot about it I think.

High Energy Techno at it's best!,

Psykosonik's brand of high-speed, high-energy techno is a force to be reckoned with. Songs like "Acid Hammer," "Welcome to my Mind," and "Teknojihad" are examples of what all techno bands should aspire to be. Like their music, their lyrics also hold a certain mesmerizing power.

I first was introduced to this band by a friend of mine who made me a tape of this album. I wore the tape out and it broke :( And I couldn't remember what the name of this band was. I just got "Unlearn," and I must say, this album surpasses the new release by far! "Unlearn" is a much more laid back version of Psykosonik. One of the reasons I like this album so much is the hard hitting beats and the great lyrics. Buy this release.... it will keep you rockin.

Even after all the years, it's still a go to album.,

I like most every kind of music and tastes sway constantly. However, ever since I bought this CD on a whim because it was on sale at Tower Records as a new release, I have yet to ever regret it and consider it fate. I still have the original CD tucked away like a treasure. The poor thing had gotten lots of use as it was always in the car with me. And since this was before MP3 players caught on, it was played from the disc constantly. Nowadays, the albums is on every device I have that will play MP3s, as I can always go back to this album, especially while in between shifts of music style preferences. It just has a sound that no one has yet to beat out in my opinion.
