Bought these test strips to share with friends. People love finding out whether they can taste the strip or not, which starts discussions about 'super tasters', genetically determined variations in taste, etc.

On a whim, I ordered these for use in my 5th gr Science class. Made the lesson memorable! Much easier than ordering from a Science supply catalog.

I tried this product on several people and it worked on people who already knew they could taste the chemical as well as on some people who had not heard of the test before. I knew I wasn't able to taste it already and I couldn't detect it. This product works as promised.

These PTC test strips, one of the so-called "supertaster tests," perform as promised. A survey of a dozen friends found 25% tasted nothing, 50% reported some mild bitterness, and 25% found the strips extremely bitter. This is more or less in line with what I've read about the distribution of the gene responsible for tasting this chemical. In retrospect, I would have bought some chemical-free control strips (PTC TEST PAPER STRIPS CONTROL VIAL 100/ STRIPS, too) for those borderline cases where people weren't sure if they were tasting the chemical or the paper. As for the potential toxicity of PTC, mentioned in other reviews, some Googling indicated that PTC's negative effects were shown in high doses with lab rats, and that one-time or occasional exposure to low doses has yet to show any bad results. Works for me. These are a lot of fun, and start some interesting conversations about your senses and tastes.
