Book Description

July 15, 2010 10 and up5 and upAge of Dinosaurs
From the long-necked Apatosaurus to the fleet-footed Velociraptor, the age of dinosaurs was filled with spectacularly diverse life forms. This new series invites readers on fascinating paleontological expeditions, opening each book with the moment of the prehistoric creature's discovery and concluding with what scientists know about it today. Illustrations and historical photographs give dinosaur enthusiasts a visually complete picture of each animal's appearance and surroundings.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This entry in the Age of Dinosaurs series uses the discovery of the first pterosaur fossil remains in 1784 as a gateway to discussing the difficulties that early scientists and anatomists had in conjecturing exactly what type of beast it might have been, an issue that persists in the particulars well into today. As such, Peterson nicely balances the known with conjecture to convey information on pterodactyl bone structure and flying techniques, nesting and eating habits, and distinctions of various uncovered specimens. The inviting design, on glossy pages, elegantly detours from the main text into details tantalizing (the 40-foot-wingspanned Quetzalcoatlus); informative (a profile of the “Father of Paleontology,” Georges Cuvier); and incredible (possible, if questionable, modern sightings around the world). The illustrations, from sharp diagrams to dramatic paintings to B-movie-worthy re-creation scenes, add some nice flair to this solid entry looking to nestle its way onto an admittedly crowded shelf. A quick bibliography and glossary are appended. Grades 5-8. --Ian Chipman
