5.0 out of 5 stars denzil writes:, March 6, 2005
This review is from: Pub (Audio CD)
I wrote a piece on this page about 5 years ago; naturally it's great to still see that our record "pub" still draws appreciation from those of you who can find it! I was recently married and the original line-up from that record played at the reception; we estimated for the first time in nine years. A website explaining all things Denzil is finally on it's way - it will take a few months, the URL will be denzilpub and british - geddit?

5.0 out of 5 stars An angler's dream., July 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Pub (Audio CD)
"Pub" is one of the more hook-laden CD's I have come across in recent history. Every song is completely different, with a charm of it's own. Somehow, Denzil has managed to weave an album of interesting pop, folk, rock, and an occasional goofball song, and then dessapear from the face of the earth. I hope, for music fans like myself, that this wasn't his debut AND swansong.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorite CD's!, July 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Pub (Audio CD)
This is one of those "stuck on a deserted island" collections. With it's catchy lyrics, melodies and hooks, Pub is the "must have" for any one who likes a well crafted song. Each one is a masterpiece in it's own right, with flawless production. The mix of acoustic and electric guitars has a folky feel anchored by a hard edge, with a definite 90's+ sound. The self-depreciating lyrics are definitely worth appreciating.

My only question is: Denzil, what happened? The CD came out several years ago, and I haven't heard anything since. I would have figured he'd be Elvis by now.

4.0 out of 5 stars worth every penny, November 3, 2006
This review is from: Pub (Audio CD)
...and since you can usually find here for a penny, what are you waiting for?

you know how sometimes you'll roll the dice on a CD in the bargain bin you know nothing about, then get it home and it's crap? be assured that won't happen here. PUB is a small classic, and one of the best records you've never heard. just look at all these other fans on here!

if you're already a fan, you can reach out and touch the man via his profile on one of the more popular networking/stalking sites out there; he's denzilpub

5.0 out of 5 stars Denzil's Pub is a true undiscovered gem, March 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Pub (Audio CD)
Songs that would sound great in a smoky pub with a pint of bitter to swill. With a sharp wit and a pounding acoustic guitar Denzil belts out a superb collection of great pop tunes. I only wish there were more Denzil CD's to find, I have played this one to death.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still gets heavy play after 3 years in our collection, December 4, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Pub (Audio CD)
This album is a true hidden gem. A catchy collection of quick pop riffs whose lyrics make you stop and listen closely..... We have been waiting , and waiting, for the follow up to this wonderful album. This CD is truly one that doesn't seem to collect dust over time, because it just doesn't seem to wear out; it is always being played in one of our cars or the other.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to believe it's the only release, October 21, 2011
By
This review is from: Pub (Audio CD)
I guess going out "on top" is better than sliding down an agonizing slope, releasing a bunch of garbage like most bands eventually do. But it's really a shame that there isn't more from this guy because this CD is so good.

I have one shelf on my larger CD rack that only gets the best in my collection, releases I know I can grab with my eyes closed and enjoy every time. This one is on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lager-drenched, bittersweet pop, June 25, 2011
This review is from: Pub (Audio CD)

I love spreading the word about great records nobody knows about. Singer/songwriter Denzil's one and only album, Pub, is filled with completely engaging, lager-drenched ruminations on stale romances, fatherhood, aging and DRINKING -- all imbued with a decidedly wry, English sensibility. The sad/funny tales are packed with poignant honesty, squalid working-class details, and a darkly self-effacing sense of humor. Yet another excellent album and artist that were nearly completely overlooked.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better luck next time., September 14, 2010
This review is from: Pub (Audio CD)
If only for the song "Running This Family," this is a small triumph of English realism, in the manner of the Kinks. Melodic, pithy, melancholic, and poignant all out, a damp sitting-room of a tune that sinks in to reprobates of all stripes, so long as they can hum a tragedy under their fetid, hoary breath.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Guitar-Driven Pop!, March 16, 2006
By
This review is from: Pub (Audio CD)
If Ray Davies and Nick Lowe had a child in 1968, that child would have released Pub in 1994. Pub features hooky, guitar-driven melodies and clever, thought-provoking lyrics. Any fan of British pop should definitely give Pub a listen. And if you're not a fan of British pop, Denzil may just make you one!
