Book Description

8461244885 978-8461244881 January 7, 2008
A thick volume packed with thirty urban projects, 'The Public Chance' forms in some respects a follow up to the earlier series 'In Common'. This new collection focuses on additional designs for collective public spaces and in so doing offers a renewed vision of both new interventions and earlier presented and now completed projects. Works presented have been divided into four thematic sections, respectively: peripheral voids, waterfronts, industrial areas and infrastructure, and are generously illustrated with colour photographs, plans, elevations and technical details.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'This is not a cheap book but it could be a very useful reference for potential clients and practitioners looking for inspiration and reassurance of what is possible. [...] Finally the book allow us to evaluate what good urban design has achieved in the recent past and as such it gives a seal of approval to the professions involved', Urban Design

From the Inside Flap

THE PUBLIC CHANCE is a visual analysis of 30 urban landscapes of opportunity. The projects selected are grouped according to scene of origin:
- Industrial areas
- Peripheral voids
- Infrastructures
- Waterfronts.
Each project is located:
- within surroundings of 60 km2 at a scale of 1:20,000
- within surroundings of 3.5 km2 at a scale of 1:10,000.

Each intervention undergoes a layer analysis:
- water

The 20 most used strategies arise from the comparison of all the projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars International icons of Urban Design, June 3, 2011
This review is from: The Public Chance: New Urban Landscapes (English and Spanish Edition) (Hardcover)
Large and wonderful book full of iconic examples of urban design and landscape architecture throughout Europe and the United States. Effective photography, renderings, and diagrams convey the character and functionality of the projects very well. Brief but concise descriptions of each of the projects supplement the wonderful imagery. Great as a reference or coffee table book for the student or professional. I work in a private design firm and we have referenced this volume for inspiration many times.

This review is from: The Public Chance: New Urban Landscapes (English and Spanish Edition) (Hardcover)
Detailed description and comparison of 34 projects under 4 main categories. Satisfactory set of data including plans and sections and comparison of each project in means of layers and urban strategies. Lots of renderings / built environment shots. Great design for an architectural book. Thanks to the publishers! Keep up the good work a+t!
