Worthy entry, August 19, 2002

A recent gift, this album probably would not have been produced today (the early nineties saw a proliferation of jazz recordings by young lions profiting from the afterglow of Wynton Marsalis' brilliance--sadly, most of the recordings are disappearing from the catalog, even if the musicians themselves are stronger than ever). On this occasion, Hargrove is merely solid, not spectacular or especially creative. Antonio Hart is beginning to show some of the spark and versatility (allusions to both Hodges and Bird) that would be a hallmark of his playing in the later nineties. But the real discovery for this listener was pianist Stephen Scott, whose swinging solos manage to kick the rhythm section up a notch on each of his opportunities. Athough he's gone on to make some recordings under his own name, from the evidence here I'm surprised he's not a household word.

Great great album!, August 15, 2010

I lost this CD over 10 years ago, and it's as great as I remembered it. This is the young Roy Hargrove, surrounded by fantastic musicians (Christian McBride, Stephen Scott, Antonio Hart, and Billy Higgins). It's straight ahead, it's thoughtful, and Roy plays his ass off. It's been hard to find ... I'm glad I found it again!

Wow! This thing showed up quick! :)
When I was a kid, I got this cd when it 1st came out & listened/handled it so many times that it got kinda beat up :( Recently, I was just thinking about it & decided to order it, takes me back :)
To the sophisticated/seasoned listener, u can say this is a good beginning for an artist; you can sense the promise in this kid (back then ;) To me, I'm a simple guy & don't need it to be too complex or over-the-top, yet this cd isn't boring either; if your in the mood for something mellow & relaxing or need some good background music for a little more casual but slightly "upper-crust" affair... this cd will serve you well.
