Good reference, Poor Readability.,

This review is from: Public Health Law: Power, Duty, Restraint, Revised and Expanded Second Edition (California/Milbank Books on Health and the Public) (Paperback)
The best part of this book is its index. After reading the Showalter Law in Health Administration text, this Gostin Public Health Law text makes me want to stick a fork in my eye. I struggled to make it through every chapter. It's verbose, unbelievably redundant, and over-complicates and beleaguers simple material. I would not recommend it. If you are in a course that uses it as a primary text book, drop the course.

Public Health Law has not attracted academic interest in Europe among Medical Law professionals. De facto, it has remained an untouched area. Therefore I was amazed to find this comprehensive title. Although it bases much on US law and case law, it still captures the essential points of PHLaw applicable everywhere. It is an fascinating story in terms of history, cases, human rights etc. It is also interesting for those interested in regulation theory.

I am starting this course that requires this text and was happy it was in Kindle format. On my first assignment I realized it will be mostly useless because there are no page numbers. Stupid oversight for a textbook. Thanks guys.

I love this book. It is one of the best written in this critical health field. I hope all public health professionals will get a copy. I like the ethical and moral discussion part of the book. Every medical personnel may want to read it. Check it out. It's an eye opener. It's great!

Lawrence Gostin is the father of modern public health law, and this treatise makes it clear why. The revised edition updates his 2000 treatise to reflect domestic and global developments (e.g., SARS, pandemic influenza, bioterrorism, obesity, changes in US takings jurisprudence, etc.). And this edition has a full chapter on global health law -- a welcome addition.
