Book Description

December 15, 2001 0875530257 978-0875530253 1st
Emergency response and public health preparedness has gained a heightened awareness in our consciousness because of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Because of these events and of the increasing number of natural disasters that have struck across the United States, there are concerns that the public health infrastructure is not sufficient to meet the need from the threats of bioterrorism or weapons of mass destruction. Public Health Management of Disasters: The Practice Guide, is the first comprehensive public health text for public health practitioners in this relatively new practice area as public health leaders begin the comprehensive nationwide integration of health departments into the emergency response of communities.

This book can serve as a quick reference for either public health practitioners or public safety personnel who need quick information about disaster response for natural, man-made, and weapons of mass destruction (AKA bioterrorism). In addition, it identifies the public health role in each aspect of disaster activity, something that no other book has done. Public Health Management of Disasters: The Practice Guide also organizes morbidity and mortality concerns by disaster so that these negative outcomes can be referred to quickly.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Public Health Management of Disasters: The Practice Guide is a scholarly addition to the evolving body of disaster medicine literature. This comprehensive text explores disasters from a public health perspective, examining systems and populations. The text's marriage of the public health and emergency management communities will aid the reader in tackling the myriad of disasters, irrespective of type or scope. --Kristi L. Koenig, MD, FACEP, Director of Public Health Preparedness, Department of Emergency Medicine, University of California at Irvine

Public Health Management of Disasters: The Practice Guide will serve as the essential desk reference not only for health professionals responsible for preparing for and responding to disasters, but for emergency managers, government officials, and other decision-makers charged with ensuring that limited resources of the affected community are well-served. --Eric K. Noji, MD, MPH, Senior Policy Advisor, Office of Terrorism Preparedness and Emergency Response, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to field of disaster management, August 18, 2006
This book was selected as a textbook for a graduate level course in Principles of Disaster Mangement at the School of Public Health at Loma Linda. The book was well written and topics were presented clearly. There is a lot of jargon which is part of the public health world, but the book is a good read. There are up-to-date references and websites for further information. Overall, very useful information and I recommend it as a great introduction to the field of disaster managment.

Great book if you are looking for a practical book about medical management of disasters. Actually took the author's course in a public health course for a degree I was seeking (I liked the book...professor, not so much...quite inflexible in the final exam, expected that students practically memorize and be able to parrot the book, I don't memorize!...all good in the end...such is life). As stated before, did like the book and would recommend it. (If you take her course, do any extra credit made available to you, you'll need it when you take the really bogus final exam!)
