Boy, I'm surprised at the reaction the book is getting! I have this book, and it's really quite good - I'm an MS-Epidemiology candidate, and it's really helped me with the fundamentals of the field. Incidentally, in response to the implication that Dr. Turnock is less than qualified to put forth an effort such as this, you might want to investigate that, you can find his impressive accompishments at the school's website. Board certified in Preventive Medicine and Public Health, and former director of the IDPH, to name a few? Sounds qualified to me. I'd recommend this book to any PH student or someone looking to learn the basics...I don't hesitate to rank this right up there with Gordis. Cheers!

This book gives you a broad and detail perspective of what Public Health is about. It discusses from history to actual issues in different areas.
It is an excellent book written in a very simple way with plenty of examples and illustrations of the topics.

Surprising good read. This is the first Public Health text I have ever read. I still own it. I guess is the best sign that this informative, somewhat interesting textbook has not been sold back for cash.

It is a good foundation for a person who is beginning his/her study in Public Health.

It was very interesting read. Public Health is much more complex than a person may think. This explains what kind of public health issues are current and ongoing. It leaves open thoughts oPublicf future problems to explore.

I bought this book as a textbook for my MPH program. It doesn't state facts right away, it just elaborates on and on, and you have to read all over to find the thesis. Could have been much more organized. It also has lots of numbers and statistics while it can just point out what they indicate. It's a good book, but with lots of redundant details.

This is a textbook. If it is required for your course you will need it because it has a detailed account of the public health system in the US since its inception. Very thorough and informative.

This was a really good comprehensive book on Public Health. I have since referred to it again and again for my other classes, to better understand the many of the concepts detailed in this book. I honestly didn't know much about Public Health or the complexity of all the mechanical parts, but after reading this book (almost from cover to cover)I have such a better understanding of how many disciplines work together to address health-related issues. This book is by no means "an easy read", I had my pocket dictionary beside me at all times, but you get the hang of it after a few chapters...my vocabulary certainly improved. I was so fortunate to attend Dr Turnock class and as an intro to Public Health, this textbook could not have been better.
