3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been much more concise
I bought this book as a textbook for my MPH program. It doesn't state facts right away, it just elaborates on and on, and you have to read all over to find the thesis. Could have been much more organized. It also has lots of numbers and statistics while it can just point out what they indicate. It's a good book, but with lots of redundant details.

Boy, I'm surprised at the reaction the book is getting! I have this book, and it's really quite good - I'm an MS-Epidemiology candidate, and it's really helped me with the fundamentals of the field. Incidentally, in response to the implication that Dr. Turnock is less than qualified to put forth an effort such as this, you might want to investigate that, you can find his impressive accompishments at the school's website. Board certified in Preventive Medicine and Public Health, and former director of the IDPH, to name a few? Sounds qualified to me. I'd recommend this book to any PH student or someone looking to learn the basics...I don't hesitate to rank this right up there with Gordis. Cheers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Public Health Intro, October 27, 2007
This book gives you a broad and detail perspective of what Public Health is about. It discusses from history to actual issues in different areas.
It is an excellent book written in a very simple way with plenty of examples and illustrations of the topics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Public Health Textbook, November 18, 2010

This review is from: Public Health: What It Is and How It Works, Second Edition (Paperback)
This is a textbook. If it is required for your course you will need it because it has a detailed account of the public health system in the US since its inception. Very thorough and informative.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good guide to understanding Public Health, December 8, 1999

This book really tells us what the Public Health is and how it works, as the title suggests. Even though data or statistics cited are somewhat outdated, you can understand the fundamental meaning of PH.

5.0 out of 5 stars Public Health Textbook, October 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This textbook is going to own my life for the next two years. Overall it is organized wonderfully and really easy to follow. It is thorough in explaining the foundations of Public Health. We use it for our Foundations of public health policy and administration classes and it's been a great resource for papers and assignments.

In addition, it provides informative reviews of different governing bodies of public health (CDC, IOM, etc.) and their respective projects or involvements in the field.

If you are studying Public Health, it's worth getting. I referred to this edition every time I have to write a paper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Public Health!, August 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This was a really good comprehensive book on Public Health. I have since referred to it again and again for my other classes, to better understand the many of the concepts detailed in this book. I honestly didn't know much about Public Health or the complexity of all the mechanical parts, but after reading this book (almost from cover to cover)I have such a better understanding of how many disciplines work together to address health-related issues. This book is by no means "an easy read", I had my pocket dictionary beside me at all times, but you get the hang of it after a few chapters...my vocabulary certainly improved. I was so fortunate to attend Dr Turnock class and as an intro to Public Health, this textbook could not have been better.

I needed this book for a class in the MPH program. I ordered it at the same time as I ordered another book from an outside book vendor. My Amazon book made it to me WAY before my other book. Very Pleased!

So far the book has been good. It would be nice if there were pictures to break up the text.
