Book Description

January 1, 2005
The volume attempts to transcend the partisan tone of current American debate and present a balanced assessment of the modern presidents from FDR to George W. Bush. Each essay consists of a biographical portrait of each president, followed by a positive and negative assessment of each man's tenure in office. Due diligence was given by the authors to be as even-handed as possible in their evaluations. All twelve presidents took actions that most people would find praiseworthy. They also did things that reasonable people would find equally egregious. This books tries to present both viewpoints—the good and the bad. This depth of balance is missing in most books. Too few assessments give a sense of the totality of the man and his presidency. I do not know of any book on the market with this format. It is hoped that the reader will have an appreciation and a clearer understanding of the American presidency.

The book is recommended by H.W. Brands, Roger K. Newman, and Robert Buzzanco. (Each has contributed a blurb for the back cover.) All are Pulitzer Prize finalists and/or established historians.

Editorial Reviews

Review

A wide-ranging and thought-provoking introduction to the modern presidency, of particular value to students and teachers. -- H. W. Brands, November 2004, finalist for the Pulitzer prize for his biography of Ben Franklin

Combines the best of those often-clashing genres, history and biography, to form the best of both: history through biography. -- Roger K. Newman, author of Hugo Black: A Biography

Will be appreciated by teachers, political scientists, journalists, and anyone else who's interested in the presidents. -- Robert Buzzanco, author of Vietnam and the Transformation of American Life

5.0 out of 5 stars Balanced Approach Sets It Apart, April 13, 2005
By
Brian Shelton (Cornelia, GA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Public Pillars/Private Lives: The Strengths and Limitations of the Modern American Presidents (Paperback)
An outstanding work that is both engaging and readable! Historians will value its accuracy and scholarly analysis, while average Americans can appreciate its interesting explanations and insights into historical events surrounding presidents FDR through George W. Bush. It is unique among presidential treatments because its authors treat each president through biography, positive assessment, and negative assessment separately. Thus, its genius is the "balanced approach."

Particularly noteworthy is the exceptional chapter on Nixon that captures the tension between a highly apt yet paranoid leader. There is an additional, special study depicting both the drama and the background of the 2004 presidential election. A great "read" for any interested in these modern political figures or just interested in reading about America over the last 70 years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read., March 9, 2011
This review is from: Public Pillars/Private Lives: The Strengths and Limitations of the Modern American Presidents (Paperback)
One of the most engaging books I have read in a while. The format allows the reader to think and process the decisions the Presidents made in a point counterpoint type style. It helped me better understand the times we live in and the past generations of Presidents and their decisions a well as context to how they made those decisions.

Needed this book for a college course, and this book worked out perfect for the class. I was glad I was able to get it at such a smaller cost than the book store was selling it for.
