5.0 out of 5 stars Complicated PR: A thing of the past
This is a fantastic do-it-yourself guide to public relations. I didn't see myself as the "for dummies" kind of person until i read this book. The book covers topics including change management, communication, marketing and issues management and makes them look easy. A must have for anyone wanting to know more about PR.

The Public Relations Kit For Dummies by Eric Yaverbaum and Bob Bly should be called The Public Relations Kit For Blooming Idiots. I cannot think of one thing I learnt from this book. If you have a basic ideal of how to create a press release and grammar skills above a forth grade level you do not need this book. Here are a few items the authors did not cover in this book:...

Here are a few items the authors did not cover in this book:

1. How to organize a press kit for any occupation such as an actor/actress, an author, ........... There should be AT LEAST A BARE BONES BASICS OF AN ORGANIZED PRESS KIT IN THIS BOOK, OR ON THE WORTHLESS CD AND THERE IS NOT.

2. There is VERY LITTLE INTERNET RESOURCES IN THIS BOOK. Shame on you two for that!

Save your $20.00. There is NOTHING in this book you cannot find on the internet in one evening of research.

Cool. Read this for a class assignment. Real world...not academic. I'm a college junior and I feel like I could do some great pr today! I'd like to try! Inspiring. Maybe there are other marketing functions that are as fun? If so I'd like to know about them. If not thanks to the Dummies folks for helping me find one that is.

I am a college professor who has taught this topic for almost 30 years. I had one disapointmentin reading this wonderfully well written book about the trade of public relations. Not much history about how the art was practiced vs. how it is now. That one criticism aside, the book was the most insightful, inspiring, unique, thought provoking book I may have come across in my teaching career. It will surely be required reading at my classes. Unfortunately the title of the book does it no justice. This book should be read by both novice and old pro. Five stars! A delight to read. A rarer delight to learn. My thanks to the authors for teaching an old dog some new tricks!

As interesting as a pr book as I have ever read. Very refreshing perspectives into this not so "magical" profession. You can read this book and actually do something with it. What a pleasant surprise! The author seems a little opionated at times, but I suppose that comes with the category? Or does it?

The case studies discussed in the book were truely inspirational and actaully not more of the same (for a well regarded change!). The praises at the beginning of the book were from such a varying group of well known entrepreneurs and CEO's, I had to read it!

There is an introduction from what appears to be a regional president of IKEA Home Furnishings. Based on examples in the book, you will learn they are a client of the author agency. No wonder they get such great press! Bet his firm didn't work on Firestone!

Excellent for a "mom and pop", a start-up, entrepreneur, Marketing VP in corporate life, and maybe a CEO or two!

I owned and ran a mid size agency in NYC, LA, London, and Toronto for 35 years before selling the company and settling into retirement. I think I have read every title on the topic. This is the single best resource I have ever had the pleasure of reading. The author knows the field. His perspective is both unique and refreshing. The language is simple to understand. The logic is sound. The examples the author uses in the book are first hand experience and were fun to read about. The only shame of this title is I fear that your average CEO or Marketing Manager will not read it because of the title. That would be a huge mistake! Fabulous reading!

4.0 out of 5 stars Really Detailed, August 19, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Public Relations Kit for Dummies (Paperback)
Not really sure if I liked public relations to make it my major, so I got this book from my classmate's recommendation. Wow! Just packed with info, and I loved the Dummies format! The Internet stuff was a bit weak, though, so same guy loaned me her Guerrilla PR: Wired by Michael Levine. 'Nother Wow! Totally deals with pr nowadays, the 'net and all that. But, PR for Dummies really did a good job of covering the whole thing. Not just stuff you think about--how to get into the media, but also budgets, planning, campaigns, everything! So, if you don't quite get what your professors are saying, then this book can definitely help you out.

Great book. Very well written. Typical of the Dummie series. Not sure how they picked the author they did (I never heard of him and I've been in the business 20 years), but he's a winner. I have a sneaking suspicion he'll become THE authority in a business filled with me too and how did Ketchum do it agencies. Finally a pr owner with a unique perspective and not afraid to say so. Actually, it seemed proud to say so! I had very low expectations and thought the book would ultimately be beneath me. What a shocker! Fabulous. Congrats to the author and the publishing house. A very worthwhile book for your business.

3.0 out of 5 stars It Could Be Better, December 11, 2002
This review is from: Public Relations Kit for Dummies (Paperback)
I bought this book because of the great reviews I read about it and with the hope that it will give me some realistic and clear-cut advice on how to practise PR and what exactly PR is all about. Despite the fact that this book provides a very easy reading with real-life examples (limited to the authors company), there is a lot of simplicity and repetition to the extend that the reader may skip entire sentenses in order to spare himself the trouble of reading the same stuff again. Furthermore, the information given is neither new nor enlightening for any reader who has some basic Business Administration knowledge. I enjoyed very much a couple of the author's tips and examples but other than that I would recommend this book only to true beginners, i.e. college students or people from totally irrelevant disciplines (e.g. architects).

One word. INCREDIBLE. You want to learn about pr, this book makes it easy. After reading this book, I have finally decided what I want to do for a living. I've taken classes, read books, sought guidance at college. This book makes pr seem so exciting. Thanks to the author for writing a book that makes his own complicated and hard to understand field so easy to understand. Wish he was a professor here. I would have known years ago what I wanted to do!
