Baby steps to public speaking,
By OnwardUpward "Ruth" (everywhere) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Public Speaking for Success (Mass Market Paperback)
When I bought this book I thought that it would be useful as a 'text' for a public speaking course I was taking. Turns out you should use it the way you use a religious text; little by little, day by day. It's not something you read through instead it's something that you use as a guide to improve over time. It's a great book but does require discipline on your part to practice what is suggested in the book.

A classic by one of America's best speakers!,
This review is from: Public Speaking for Success (Mass Market Paperback)
A classic by one of America's best speakers! This book will aid the newbie in becoming a much better speaker - and perhaps take some of the butterflies out of the stomach if that is a problem for the reader. Of course we can expect as much from Carnegie. So forget the size of the book - its great - you will find many very good strategies to help make your speech very impactful and persuasive.
Two other books that can make your speaking like dynamite are: How To Preach Like A Preacher!: A Complete Training How-To Book For Preaching Like A Pro! Mastering Persuasive Public Speaking: The Influence Approach See you on stage!

This review is from: Public Speaking & Influencing Men In Business (Paperback)
Never buy, read, or listen to a "poser" discussing confidence, success, or public speaking again. THEY all stole their material from Dale Carnagie.
This is IT. Buy Carnagie and keep him next to your other favorite books to be read again and again.

Well Worth the Price of Admission,

This review is from: Public Speaking for Success (Mass Market Paperback)
This book continues to be the best overall book on presentation skills. Originally published in 1926 and updated in 2005, Carnegie shares timeless tenets for speaking successfully to the public. Clocking in at 448 small type pages, it is a bit of a slog to get through his diction exercises, but his timeless advice is well worth the price of admission.

Contents ok, but formatting is soo awkward you will put it aside.,

This review is from: Public Speaking & Influencing Men In Business (Paperback)
This is a review of "Public speaking" by Dale Carnegie.
I bought this book because I liked the common sense approach and lessons from one of his other books, so I expected something similar. I was disappointed, and the main reason is the unusual formatting of the book: - small print, rather big size book (20x25 cm) - text is formatted not in two columns (as would be appropriate for the small font size used) but in just one column from border to border on a page that hardly has any margin space. Margins are ~0.5cm on all sides! - the table of contents is far too detailed and awkwardly formatted. The overall effect of this is that the book has no attractive 'look and feel'. It feels more like a reference book, not something you will eagerly go through from cover to cover. On the positive side, there is a summary at the end of every chapter. Taking all into account I would give some points for the content and the speaker/writer, but the formatting just makes me downgrade it severely: it is a show stopper for me. |
