5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable info for anyone who wants to promote anything!, November 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Six Steps To Free Publicity and Dozens Of Other Ways To Winfree MediaAttention For You Or Your Business (Paperback)
6 Steps to Free Publicity is one of my business bibles. Many marketing books tout the value of sending out press releases, but none of them tell you what a press release is or how to write one. None, except this one. I sat down with this book and followed Marcia's step by step instructions and wrote my first press release 4 1/2 years ago when I started my business. That release got my name mentioned in an article on the front page of the business section of a regional newspaper. That article led to a splashy "Business Profile" in a future Sunday business section. That in turn led to appearances on radio and cable TV. That led to additional articles in other newspapers. All that from one press release crafted by using Marcia's clear, effective tips and techniques. Marcia, everytime someone says to me "I see your name and picture in the newspaper all the time," I think of you and smile!

5.0 out of 5 stars Six Steps to Free Publicity, January 22, 2000
This review is from: Six Steps To Free Publicity and Dozens Of Other Ways To Winfree MediaAttention For You Or Your Business (Paperback)
I have purchased and studied many "how to do it" books on publicity, but 6 Steps to Free Publicity is the one I return to again and again. As a children's author with a book to promote on a very limited budget,I find Marcia Yudkin's book invaluable.

The directions in the book are easy to follow and make anyone feel like an instant expert. I have only just begun to utilize many of the ideas offered in the book and am already getting terrific results. The book gives many basic building blocks to a PR campaign, any of which can be used on their own, but they are even more effective when combined.

I like the idea of being in control of my own publicity: after all, no one cares about the success of my book as much as I do, and 6 Steps to Free Publicity gives me the necessary confidence. I highly recommend this book to anyone needing help learning how best to get publicity for their project, but most especially, to other authors who are trying to get their books the notice they deserve.

Marcia Yudkin doesn't hold back: she generously shares her expertise in this practical guide to self publicity, and as the president of a young consulting practice, I can't recommend this book often or loud enough! Don't know how to write (or use) a press release? Wondering how to communicate effectively with the media? Always wanted to write articles for magazines and newspapers, but haven't a clue where to begin? Read this book: Marcia Yudkin walks you through the critical steps of garnering publicity for your business, in clear, crisp and often hilarious prose. What a treasure of terrific advice!

4.0 out of 5 stars Smart Marketers Will Listen to Marcia Yudkin, February 25, 2001
This review is from: Six Steps To Free Publicity and Dozens Of Other Ways To Winfree MediaAttention For You Or Your Business (Paperback)
Coming into a newly-created marketing position for a professional association, I have next to no budget and no support from the so-called communications staff. I've known Marcia Yudkin from her "Marketing Minute" e-mail and the Click-Z forum and knew I better get her "6 Steps to Free Publicity." Yudkin is marvellous at highlighting how publicity can go the extra mile where marketing dollars can't. She's even better at inspiring the reader with great ideas. I'm using the tools I've learned from this book to not only market my association and products, but also passing along ideas and tips from the book to bolster the Communication Director's misguided efforts. Thanks Marcia!

I am the publicity chairman for the PTO of a new elementary school. I knew I wanted to do more than send snapshots into the local paper, but I didn't know where to begin. I ordered "6 Steps to Free Publicity" and read it in a day. Although it's geared toward the small business person or an individual looking to promote himself professionally, I found that I could apply many of the ideas to promote our school. I am in the process of assembling a press kit, to alert the media to the opening of our new building, with ideas I found in "6 Steps." We're only three weeks into the school year so I don't yet know if my plans will result in positive publicity for our school, but I feel very confident.

I've used Marcia Yudkin's ideas on writing letters to editors twice. Each time, a variation of my letter lead to a small feature in a newspaper and, even better, new sales! I even have a repeat customer - which is like gold! What I like best about the book is that there are enough different ways to get publicity, that there's a style or method for everyone. You don't have to be outgoing, network like crazy, make sales calls or anything. If you want to be "low key", there are still ideas in this book that will appeal to you and be effective, too.

I am the PR Chairperson for my organization. We are planning our National Convention for July 2002. This book is great. If gives me the basics I need to head up this committee and to know how to handle myself in an area in which I have no experience. Just last week I called a contact at a local newspaper who immediately said.."sorry, can't speak, I'm on deadline." I had just read the chapter that addressed this; how not to take this personally because this is what happens in their line of business. However this person continued to apolgize, took my number and promised to call next week. Admittably so, I am a sensitive person. So, had I not read the book, I probably would not have felt as confident as I did!

Not for nothing, but somewhere on the backburner I wouldn't mind considering a career in this field....somewhere down the line.

5.0 out of 5 stars Help (for small business owners) is on the way!, November 1, 2000

As the owner of a website business that advertises vacation rental homes, I am constantly looking for ways to increase the exposure of my website-without stressing my meager marketing budget. In Marcia Yudkin's book, I have found a veritable warehouse of practical and creative ideas for not only publicizing our website but doing it in a way that will engender trust and credibility. The inclusion of many real-life examples makes for easy reading (I read it in two sittings), yet I came away from it with dozens of ideas for implementing my advertising campaign. This is a definite read for any small or home-based business owner. My next book to read? Marcia's "Internet Marketing for Less than $500/Year."

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book for Free Self-Promotion!, April 2, 2000
This review is from: Six Steps To Free Publicity and Dozens Of Other Ways To Winfree MediaAttention For You Or Your Business (Paperback)
I opened a full-time wicker restoration, chair caning and basketry studio in the early 1990s and had little capitol to spend on advertising.

The best and most helpful book I ever purchased was Marcia's book in 1994. I have considered it my Bible, and refer to frequently.

By applying her techniques for obtaining free publicity, I have appeared on Public TV programs, my work has been featured in national and trade magazines, and I have developed a teaching and lecture series across the nation.

Thank you Marcia for instilling the confidence I needed to persue and perpetuate my art without a huge financial drain on the pocketbook!

5.0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile investment, January 21, 2000

This review is from: Six Steps To Free Publicity and Dozens Of Other Ways To Winfree MediaAttention For You Or Your Business (Paperback)
During my first year of business I purchased 6 Steps to Free Publicity by Marcia Yudkin. It was the best ten dollars I ever spent on a book. I followed Marcia's advice step by step -- offered to speak to any group that would have me, taught continuing education classes and got several newspapers to write a story about my career counseling business. Just as Marcia promised, one story led to another and before long I was getting more publicity than I ever thought possible. Thanks to Marcia I have not spent a dime on advertising during the past two years, yet my business continues to grow and prosper.
