Huge Help Getting Started in the Quilt Design Business,
By Diane Weber (Cupertino, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Publish Your Patterns! How to Write, Print, and Market Your Designs (Paperback)
Nancy Restuccia's book, with the sidebar additions of Ann Anderson and others, is incredibly helpful to the new designer. I've read it cover to cover and it answered all my questions about how to get started. I followed the pattern cover design layout instructions to a 't', and it yielded a great cover design. I've used the resource list for ordering products and information. There is no other source I have found with this kind of information. Great resource - well written and organized - easy to use the table of contents, with the added bonus of an index, to get back to the specific piece of information you need.

Everything you need to know....,
This review is from: Publish Your Patterns! How to Write, Print, and Market Your Designs (Paperback)
This book is incredible! The only bad thing about this book is that it wasn't around when I started ... If I had this book, it would've saved me hours of research and time. This book needs to be an essential item for ANYONE interested in becoming a quilt professional in any arena - not just publishing patterns!

I wish I had this book when I first started!,

I am just a small quilt pattern publisher that started without knowing anything about the pattern business. I wish I had this book when I first started! Nancy's book is no nonsense and answers those questions like, "Where do I begin?", "How do I get my pattern in the hands of the buyer?" and "How much do I charge for my pattern?" It is a reference that I will refer to again and again. Anyone considering publishing their own patterns needs this book!

My primary reference source!,

Nancy Restuccia's book is my "Bible"! It is an invaluable resource for publishing and marketing designs and patterns, and it also contains LOTS of information relevant to other small businesses. In a conversational, easy-to-read voice, she covers the design process, marketing, pricing, business and legal issues, and even offers sample language to use for disclaimers, contracts, etc. As a new pattern designer/publisher, I was alerted to a lot of issues I hadn't thought of, and was able to avoid a lot of common mistakes. I would be lost without this book, and I refer back to it more frequently than any other book I own.

Publish Your Own Patterns! How to Write, Print, and Market,

Being rather new to the business, I found this book very informative in areas I hadn't even thought about. It was very helpful with things I should do as well as things I shouldn't have been doing. There is so much to learn in the world of marketing patterns, and very few books geared specifally for that market. I would highly recommend this book to any newcomer trying to get into the field of creating and marketing their own patterns.

I am a crocheter and I do design. I want to thank Nancy Restuccia for this wonderful book. Finally all the little secrets about writing and selling any pattern. So much information in this little book, very easy to read.

A gold mine for any designer,

OK, I'm not a quilter. And I have no plans on self-publishing paper patterns.
Still, I have a learnt a LOT of useful things in this book! My copy has paper clips on many pages, to mark the chapters I want to refer to in my work. A very interesting book for any textile designer!

Targeted How-to Information,
This review is from: Publish Your Patterns! How to Write, Print, and Market Your Designs (Paperback)
Short on style but packed with terrific, detailed how-to information. A lot of start-your-own-business books seem to have mostly vague information. Not this one. Included are names of specific software that is helpful, printers, etc. If you have any thoughts of publishing patterns, you need this book. It will quickly become a much used reference guide.

Not for Garment Designers,
By
This review is from: Publish Your Patterns! How to Write, Print, and Market Your Designs (Paperback)
This book should properly be titled "Publish Your Craft Patterns". There is no information on garment drafting, grading, sizing, and nothing on getting the actual patterns printed. It's a decent book, as far as it goes, but it doesn't go nearly far enough.
