This review is from: How to Self Publish and make money (Writing, publishing and selling your book in Canada) (Paperback)
When I self-published my first book back in 1995, I wished I'd had a copy of How to Self Publish and Make Money in front of me. Knowing that I'd be publishing a sequel, I bought the 1997 revised edition, and focused mainly on chapters regarding promotion and marketing. With all the self-published books on the market now, I was wondering if this book still stacked up in today's climate. The answer is yes, and no.First of all, print books still matter, and they do sell. One of the most important and relevant chapters discusses key questions writers should ask themselves when considering whether to self-publish or go the traditional route. Just because it's easier and cheaper to self-publish than it was back then, it doesn't mean you necessarily should for a number of reasons. Crook & Wise's chapters on the importance of producing a professional looking and fully edited manuscript are more relevant than ever. Too many authors are skimping on professional cover design, and I know several who don't believe in hiring a professional editor when they have books to help them do it themselves. Yikes! The chapter which addresses book pricing, distribution, wholesalers, and discounting is still helpful for any writer unfamiliar with the business side of publishing. Given that this book was written before the world of ebooks, it is, of course, out of date in that respect. Still, professionalism and the book business are still mainstays that new authors might find helpful, particularly for those who still believe in print.
