I am very new at trying to publish a design. This book was recommended to me and I found out why. Well written and easy to understand directions from beginning to end. I was terrified to try and publish a quilt design until I read this book. Following step by step instructions made it easy and fun. It could be labeled "Publishing for Dummies", the index is very specific and the book is detailed. Good luck and I know you will get as much use out of it as I did. --New Designer

I had been designing for needlework, craft and quilting magazines on and off for over 25 years when I decided the time was right to start my own pattern business and take my hobby seriously. One of the first things I did (on the recommendation of several professional designers) was to purchase this book. I can't say enough good things about it. Through the years I've read literally dozens of book on selling your arts and crafts, home businesses, and the like, but this is the ONLY book I've ever seen that gave designing one's own patterns more than just a couple of vague sentences, and specifically addressed the questions I had. --Designer

This book was recommended on a blog for anyone who would be interested in publishing their patterns.
I liked this book. It has a lot of information, full page samples of how to format etc.
A couple of softwares recommended in this book are outdated now. But other than that, it gives complete information from start to finish: from plan of a pattern in your head to how to put it in paper to market it.

This book is clear, easy to understand & covers every aspect of self publishing patterns. It doesn't gloss over the difficulties, but gives suggestions for getting past them. It has also helped me to evaluate whether or not this is something I should really try to do! I recommend it to anyone who is considering this process.

I recently decided to publish my own patterns. I was sure I would write the perfect pattern, but thought I should check this book out before I published my first. Good thing I did. I found I'd made a lot of mistakes; nothing that would make the pattern unusable, but would make the pattern irritating. There are a lot of good tips, too, on marketing and distributing. Thank you, Nancy - I think every indie pattern designer should read this book before publishing.

I don't know what I expected but this is an older book published in 2001 and updated in 2008. There is so much that has changed about publishing patterns that some of this is not applicable. I would probably have someone else do all the work and just give them the ideas. I did learn about [...] which now owns the rights to the book.

I design for crochet, not sewing, and my patterns are downloadable, not physical, so some of this was irrelevant to me, but I still devoured the entire book in two or three days. It was very practical about things like copyright - since it covers items made from a pattern as well as the pattern, how do you let people do enough with their purchased pattern to feel satisfied without letting them do so much that they are taking advantage? What about including something that can be photocopied without giving the purchaser trouble at the copy shop, where copyright is enforced more strictly than sometimes? There are considerations of graphic design and page layout, direct selling versus consignment versus distributors, craft fairs, and many other topics. I had been looking for craft business books for some time before finding this by happenstance, and I am glad I did and will be recommending it to others.

With help from this book, I went from idea to three printed patterns for sale in stores in only 8 weeks! The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because the book lacks sufficient info about PDF/digital download patterns. (Sites, security, etc.). Understandable why it wasn't included in depth but I think it's a necessary topic for today's pattern designers.

I highly, highly recommend this book for anyone interested in designing and selling their own patterns!

This text contains some very useful advice, but is in need of an update: the material on computer programs and internet sites should either be updated or supplemented with an appendix.
